I took the decision to quit some time ago...

Hey You All!

I took the decision to quit as a pro snowboarder some time ago but I figured I should let you Onboard readers know.

Being a pro for the last 6 years I’ve learned a lot, I’ve gotten to travel to really cool places and met some great people! Now it’s time to move on. I felt I wasn’t going anywhere with my riding and I needed new challenges!

As of now I’m a student at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm where I’m learning about digital communication and web strategies.

I did not, however, quit riding. Nor did I leave the scene completely. This is just a break. I’ll be back on the mountain with you guys sooner or later!

I would like to shout out some creds to certain people that helped me during the years:

NITRO SNOWBOARDS
DEELUXE
ANON
SKULLCANDY
GRAVIS
Boardstore.se
Kask
Pirate Movie Production
The rest of you riders, photographers, mag dudes, business people, party guys and everyone else I met.

You all rock!!! \m/

I put some of my old video parts on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/jonteedvardson

As an old grandpa I'm scrolling through my old photo albums...

First of all: sorry for the absence of entries on my blog. Since I attended the Interactive Communication program at Berghs School of Communication there has been very little time for anything but learning about internet with online campaigns, strategies and online brand- and design management.

In these times of double inverted 1260s and triple backflip 360s I thought I might share some of the early photos of my career. My brother Linus and me always shredded around in Hundfjället where our family holiday house is located. Sometimes we brought an old cam just to document our sessions. Following photos are from a couple of those sessions:

I think the photos are from 1994-1996. Back then spinning wasn’t really that important. If you threw a Mc twist you were the man!

I went to the That’s it That’s all premier here in Stockholm a week ago and DAMN! Pretty sick riding. But what Really made an impression on me was the beautiful cinematography. That’s 35mm for you… Impressive!

Music Tip: Keep of Kalessin – Kolossus

Summer, metal and beer.

Haven’t been blogging that much lately. Summer time should not be spent in front of a computer, even though it actually did most of the time anyway…

So what happened?

Anyone heard of a music mag called Metal Hammer? Anyone heard of their yearly award event that they hold in London? Since this perticular event is the biggest in europe in its kind and well visited by many of my musical heroes, it’s been a dream for me to go there. In june Skullcandy marketing manager Erik Abrahamsson called me and wanted me to join this event since SkullCandy was presenting the award “the album of the year”. Tough decision? HELL NO!

It turned out to be the highlight of the summer. We were partying back stage with everyone that was there: Kerry King, Kat von D, Biff Byford, Max Cavalera and many more. 5 bands played live: In flames, Children of Bodom, Apocalyptica, Disturbed and Testament. London sure rocks!!!

Our personal ass kisser Luis, Slayer’s Kerry King and a tiny Swedish headbanger.

Testament received “The album of the year” presented by SkullCandy.

Just a couple of weeks after this event I went to shoot the West Coast Riot and Metaltown festivals. Three days of working and boozing in scandinavias metal capital – Gothenburg. The performances were super with highlights like Flogging Molly, Nifelheim, Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon and of course Gothenburg´s own In Flames ending up the festival with a huuuuuge pyro show worth of €35 000! Swedens biggest metal export definitely showed everybody that they deserve it! Afterwards I thanked singer Anders Fridén for the outstanding performance and he humbly replied “Well, we do what we can…” Thanks again Erik for a fantastic event!

Vortex of Dimmu Borgir.

One of my favourite bands Nifelheim. More evil than Lex Luthor.

Happy Swede on the left, Satanic Norwegian rocker Shagrat of Dimmu Borgir on the right.

In Flames rounding up their fantastic show.

A month ago or so Iron Maiden entered Stockholm and I of course went to see them. They were supposed to do a complete tour with only hits from the 80:s! (except Fear of the dark which came out 92 I think). Even though Bruce had a sore throat and therefore had problem with the higher notes, the show was wonderful and even though the guys are getting old they sure play tight!

Iron Maiden with a huge backdrop.

Of course this blog has nothing to do with snowboard except that Satyricon had an Anon sticker on their keyboard… Even if you’re love winter or worship the summer sun we’re getting closer to fall which means colder and wetter and sooner than you think the snow will begin falling…

But until then I’ll keep on pumping you with bullshit boiling over from my ever so busy mind

Music tip: Behemoth – Slaves shall serve (SICK intro from polish metal veterans Behemoth)

Yes, Marduk entered Nordland last Saturday...

Marduk, one of the most prominent Scandinavian black metal bands did their first show ever north of Stockholm. And they’ve been playing for 16 years!

Since Marduk is one of my absolute favourite bands shooting them has been a dream for me. I went there working for festivalphoto.net. The organisers turned out to be super nice guys with a burning desire for their music genre. As they showed me to the stage I realised that this was going to be a test. It was tiny and there were almost no room to climb around for getting the right angles. The light was anything but strong and all red- definitely not the best conditions to shoot in.

At least I got to practise on local death metal band In Battle, a group of very talented and nice guys. But when Marduk entered, that’s when hell broke loose. Mortuus were furious pulling one hit after another out of his bullet belt. “With Satan and Victorious Weapons” as well as “Panzer Division Marduk” really got the ground to shake.

Apart from the problem with the base drum that broke, the gig was fantastic and I was happy to meet the band afterwards in their lounge to chat and take some fast portraits.

Marduk is doing a couple of festivals this summer before going on a European tour late fall. Don’t miss it.

The only thing a resort needs is a good shaper...

Vännäs is a small village located 30 km west of Umeå in the northern parts of Sweden. Here you can find the second Swedish snowboard academy that raised riders like Hans Åhlund and Nicky Wieveg. You can also find a small hill consisting of two short lifts and two slopes. Despite the size of this resort, Vännäs has held many contests and sessions during the years. It’s also been one of the few resorts in northern Europe to host a top quality half pipe.

Me, Jonas Hagström and photographer Daniel Blom went to check it out some time ago. Shaper Anders Gothnell had invited us to a season ending session and we gladly accepted. We were promised a pipe, corner and a gap kicker. As we arrived late afternoon the kicker session was already on. Photographers Peter Lundström and Anders Neuman were busy while riders like Jonas Gustavsson, Stefan Karlsson and Martin Sandberg were shredding. The kicker looked beautiful! After trying the speed me and Jonas went for it and even though there was a pretty huge gap it didn’t feel scary at all. The kicker was a masterpiece, both to ride but also aesthetically. Gotte had shaped a quarter on both sides in the gap- both the landing and the take off part. We rode for a couple of hours and when the sun was gone we just wanted to keep on shredding. We figured however that we better save some muscle power for the corner session the following day.

Me and my colourful setup.

Since the hill is so small we had to be towed in for the corner, even though it was located in the end of the slope. Gotte had shaped it perfectly and we hit it for a couple of hours. Former Swedish pipe champion Markus Jonsson was kind to tow us in on the school sled.

Jonas being filmed by TV4.

In the evening we went back to hit the kicker again. Gotte had put some extra pop into in to ensure the photos came out as sick as possible. The kicker was so good that we just couldn’t stop shredding it. When Blom had his shots, me and Jonas probably hit it 15 more times. At the end of the session we got in the car and drove the 5 hours back to Östersund happily knowing that we surely killed the spot.

Simon Ax.

It’s funny how different the quality of parks can be. I’ve visited so many parks in my career and so many times I’ve been disappointed. Gigantic ski resort claiming to have sick parks and when you show up it’s crap. Then you have small resorts like Vännäs and Kläppen with parks that are just amazing. Åre was probably the sickest park in Sweden, next to Kläppen, last year but it wasn’t thanks to its size or its famous brand. It was thanks to Anders Gothnell. A resort don’t need a lot of money or hype to build a good park, nor need they build a huge and expensive park. They just need someone like Gotte who loves what he’s doing and does it damn well! As Åre sucked this year, Vännäs was the shit thanks to Gotte. And I say thanks for letting me shred one of the best kickers in Scandinavia ever!

Music Tip: In Flames – Colony (the album by Swedish In Flames that made me love death metal)

The bad weather followed us to Åre...

For the second year in a row, Burton held their halfpipe invitational in Åre. Last years event was one of the funniest of the year and the expectations for this year was all time high.

Since shaper Gotte left Åre last year the pipe had been shit so he had some hard work to do to get it fixed for the event. But with his skills he managed to deliver a solid and long (and I mean Long!) pipe for us to shred. I missed the training day due to some problems with the event management but I got to shred it enough on the competition day. The slush had frozen during the night so we woke up to a very hard and icy pipe. And as a result of the lacking sun, the pipe were to stay like this until the end of the event.

The pipe was very slippery and hard to ride in the beginning. I managed to over rotate a spin, slip on my edges in the bottom and knock my face in the ground. It felt like my nose fell of but after it stopped bleeding I continued to training. First we did the qualification followed by head to head. I got to meet Jacob Wilhelmsson this year again. Last year I kicked his ass but this year he was thirsty for revenge. I won the first and sticked my next two runs. So did Jacob and the judges picked him for the semi final. For me it was over but I was already looking forward for the evening party.

Nitro’s Patrik Lundin with old piperipper/coach Petter Levin.

After a superb dinner at Werséns we went for the bar to spend the pile of drinking tickets we were issued. The party was sick but it wasn’t until Skullcandy’s team boss Erik wanted to buy me a drink that it all went dizzy. Me and Carro went home a bit earlier and it wasn’t until the next day that I learned that it was 12 centilitres of booze in the drink. 35 euros. Wiiiiihaaa… That was a good ride. It looked better on the way out the next day though.

Me, my red nose, Erik and the drink…

We’ll never grow up…

BHPI turned out to be a sick event with a lot of happy faces. Next up is the shoot in Vännäs. Gotte promises pipe, corner and gap kicker!

Music Tip: Carnal Forge – I smell like Death.

Bad weather but killer suits!

A couple of weeks ago a group of strong and determined men gathered in Sälen/Sweden to work. Even though it was already April the weather gods were obstinate to embraced our presence with snow. But in bad weather great ideas are spawn…

Swedish team- and creative shoot manager Patrik Lundin had brought a hockey trunk of costumes to spice up the week and as the first sunny day appeared the Tandådalen park got invaded by super heroes, disco dancers and fairy tale characters. We had an awesome time killing the park with sick tricks and even sicker outfits.

Tandådalen welcomed us with some “unique obstacles”, the other crazier than the last. Simon quickly fell in love with the four-spines-in-a-row-line where he threw sick tricks on his snow racer.

The shoot turned out to be sick and even though the weather wasn’t on our side we still left Sälen with a big smile!

The time of the year for us old pipe shredders...

Back in the days everybody rode pipe. That was what it was all about. And every weekend there would be a swedish cup competition where you could show everyone the tricks you’d learned during the past week. Then there came a time when pipe was “no longer cool”. When rails was the new thing and kickers was the only thing that existed in the snowboard videos. Nobody in sweden wanted to ride pipe any longer and the competitions died out. There wasn’t a swedish championship for years. Then last year they awoke the beast and held a successful event in Åre. This year it was Vännäs who hosted the event and I must say it turned out to be one of the best organised championships ever!

It started on thursday with big air. Everybody also got the chance to ride the pipe for 4 hours thursday and friday until the qualifications started friday evening. In the senior class there were 70 competitors, many of us who haven’t been riding pipe for years. It was good to see all these old faces again! I didn’t have a clue that many of them had become fathers, their wives standing on the coping cheering with the kids sleeping next to them. And guess what, they were Still kicking ass in the pipe! A good pipe rider never loses the feeling.

Anton Bergsten, Göran Andersson, Markus Jonsson, Tomas Johansson, Björn Lindgren, Joel Hagström and so on. They were all riding like they did 7 years ago, if not better! And I sure did better than I ever did in a championship before. Piperiding is back and it’s here to stay! I know that, the organisers as well as the oldies knows it and even the kids admitted that pipe is great fun. And many of them had great potential. Count on sick swedish pipe shredders in a couple of years!

So the competition then? Well, Magnus Sterner showed that he can do all his tricks sleeping if he had to. He won the big air and came third in the pipe comp. Second was Tomas Johansson who is a former winner of the total world cup many years ago. Winner, for the second year in a row, was our own power dwarf- Micke Sandy! Flipping and spinning his way down the ditch he showed that he is the most technical pipe rider of sweden. And he did it with style! Congratulations!!!

On the way home me and Simon Ax had a new experience. At 140 km/h the left side-air bag suddenly exploded with a noise that made the ears go *beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. The car quickly filled with gun powder smoke and Simon screaming with pain from his arm… We got off the road to settle down. We were pretty shaky when we got out to find no damage of the car. Simon must have hit something lying on the street that crashed into the air bag sensors. We had to tow the car away and wait for some friends to pick us up and we finally arrived again in Östersund 5 hours later than planned- but alive at least, thanks to Simons epic driving skills.
