Last weekend we headed to the Suzuki Iron Night 2008, a 2 star TTR event that took place in one of the most beautiful valleys in Germany, eh sorry, Austria!
The thing with the Kleinwalsertal is a bit complicated: Actually it belongs to Austria but you can only reach it from Germany. The police wears Austrian uniforms but you pay German taxes on the petrol (which makes it way more expensive). Some people who are living there since many generations call themselves German, others Austrians. Anyway, it is a very open valley with some of the best backcountry and parks you can get in Germany, or shall I say Austria?
On Saturday the Iron Night (http://www.wirschanzen.de), one of the stops of the Suzuki Wir Schanzen contest series, was happening and a few thousand spectators were watching how rookies like Friedl May, Flo Buergel and Aaron Holterman killed it in the perfect park (when I say “perfect” I really mean perfect – the obstacles looked like they were cut out of plaster, the shapers did an amazing job!).
I won´t tell you yet who won as you will be able to read a detailed contest report in our “events” section later this day, together with some proper pictures (did I already tell you that I´m not the best photographer? Well, judging from my pictures I had a really bad day and could somebody please tell me why I have a flash if it is not working at night?).
I know the picture is way too dark but I´m not a very talented photographer, eh I mean the camera sucked!
But what I can tell you, the contest was a banger, the kids really enjoyed the easy going atmosphere and despite minus 12 degrees (I felt it was more like minus 20 degress but I´m a girl and we are always freezing, right?) the people didn´t go home until some guys almost killed themselves at the Best Trick Contest that ended the Iron NIght at around 10 o´clock.
Jenny from MBM and Eve from Rebel Media/ Suzuki cuddeling to stay warm at minus 12 degrees…
As we all had tried to warm up our degenerated bodies with litres of Glühwein we had to cool them down again with litres of cool beer at the party in the casino that lasted until the early morning hours. Some kids literally took it a bit over the edge and crashed their car into a wall on the way home at 4.30 – fortunately they got not too bad injuries… Also if some people might think it is cool to drink and drive, it is not!
On Sunday we went up on the mountain and had to excape the mass tourism (the school holidays in Holland just started!) immediately with some longer hikes – if you know the resort a little bit you can find some perfect backcountry kicker spots and powder runs even more than a week after the last dump! Just check out our spot report about the Kleinwalsertal in the next Onboard issue (on sale March 17th)…More information on the contest, the best trick and the winner in the events section of this website!
