Standard Films have been dropping high-quality movies documenting snowboarding’s yearly evolution for something like 18 years – yep, since before some of you scamps were born – and show no signs of slowing up as they release the teaser for their latest all-terrain gnarlfest, The Storming. We caught up with director Travis Robb to get a heads up on what we can expect…
Onboard: How does a new project mature in your head? Do you have a precise idea of how you want to do before you start shooting?
Travis Robb: Every year is different when it comes to developing the treatment for the film. This year was fun, because there was a spirit of progression in the air among the riders, there were new tricks to be tried and documented as well as new challenges for all the riders to up the ante on every level….
OB: How do you manage to improve the team every year? Do you constantly scope for new riders?
TR: Yeah, we are constantly scouting new riders throughout each year, I personally look for riders with natural style that I think will look good on camera.
OB: Is it difficult to find a new concept every year or you just go with the flow of the shootings?
TR: For sure it is difficult, there are alway tons of ideas on the table at the start of the season, and you never know what will and will not be accomplished during the course of the year… So, I am always amazed how the film takes form about half way through the season, it is then that I try to look at putting it all together in away that captures the look and feel of the season. It is a really organic process, the film is treated as its own entity and we at Standard are the lucky people to be entrusted to guide it to the finish line… on time of course… [laughs]
OB: Who is new to the team and what do you think of those riders?
TR: Ryan Tiene is the new stand out rider for the film this year… he rips… his style is amazing! His riding reminds me a lot of a young Devun Walsh.
OB: Tell us about this year’s movie?
TR: It is gonna be a roller coaster! Really stoked on the footage this year, and we have some fun audio and edit ideas that should make the film fun to watch! And also new this year is the first girl montage in a Standard Film so there should be something for everyone to relate to this year! The girls always cheer the loudest at the premieres so we are putting something special in the film this year for them to get fired up on!
OB: What are the highlight trip of the season for you guys?
TR: Sammy [Leubke] and Xavier [De Le Rue] in Valdez, Alaska. They had amazing conditions and both of them were in the mood to get nasty on some insane AK terrain… and we also had a epic rail trip with Torstein Horgmo to his hometown of Trondheim, Norway. It was -25 celcius the whole time with 6 hours of glorious golden hour light a day! So sick!
OB: Any rider that didn’t make the cut?
TR: Sorry, but too early to say.
OB: Any part you think will stand out?
TR: There were a lot of riders that really went for it this year… and I really think people are going to be stoked on what Torstein Horgmo, Sammy Luebke, Kazu Kokubo, Xavier De Le Rue and Halldor Helgason have put together for the film this season!
