Despite the blue sky and the sunshine, it was snowing last Saturday in Lausanne! A carpet of fresh blanket snow fell gently on the Bel-Air stairwells of the Flon district, where 2 rails had been installed for the occasion. The snowboarders and freestyle skiers were stoked with the conditions. 50 riders had come along to try and win entry to the up and coming CHAMPS Rip Curl Open, which will take place in Crans-Montana in February 2007.
The eventual winners were Rip Curl riders, Louis JOSEPHE, taking the skiing crown, and Victor DAVIERT, who won the snowboarding event.
Saturday 18th November, the Lausanne Session was all that it promised to be. A rail-sliding competition organised on the Bel-Air stairwells. Open to all, the participants came from all over Switzerland, but also from France and Scandinavia. After 2 hours of jam session, the judges were finally able to deliberate and name the winners. The winners were two French guys; 15 year old Victor DAVIERT won the snowboard event and his entry to the TTR 5* event at the CHAMPS Rip Curl Open, and Louis JOSEPHE, also 15, won the freeski and an invitation to compete in the Freeski event at Crans-Montana. And no forget the “Best trick” in ski for the Swedish Blayze BRAMWELL, new rider of the Rip Curl Team.
This amateur competition was followed by a one-hour show by the pros. A second rail was added to enhance the difficulty and make the spectacle more intense. Amongst those demonstrating their demon skills was Pat Kägi. The American-Swiss, rail specialist and 7th at the US Open Rail Contest (mythical American event), honoured the Lausanne public with his presence. He also advised on set-up, being one of the first to test the Lausanne run, and then followed up with some very complicated and technical runs throwing together a plethora of moves.
The Lausanne public were out in force. About 12 000 spectators turned up to give a very special ambiance to the competition. Many riders said they preferred this type of meeting because of the wild atmosphere that the snow fans generate.
After this city event, the CHAMPS Rip Curl Open is getting ready for an all-new formula, which will take place at Crans-Montana from the 2nd to the 11th February 2007. 10 days of competition where the world’s best freeskiers and snowboarders will battle it out, not to mention the brand new ‘Backcountry ‘event.
That’s where you’ll find these two young prodigies, starting from the 2nd February at the Crans-Montana CHAMPS Rip Curl Open.
