Romain De Marchi is primed to bring his unique mix of explosive riding and decades of mountain experience to the Billabong team. “It’s an honor to have such a talent join the team,” said David Pitschi, Billabong Outerwear Marketing manager. “Romain’s backcountry riding experience and knowledge of the snowboarding world will be a huge asset in the development of our outerwear division.”

Romain joins Wolle Nyvelt, Antti Autti, Eero Niemela, Sylvain Bourbousson, Johan Baisamy, Clint Allan and Tadashi Fuse on the team.

Coming off an incredible winter, Helen Schettini has also joined the Billabong team. Following her scene-stealing video part in the YES movie Helen has generated a huge industry-wide buzz. Her backcountry style and experience completes an already great team of riders including Jenny Jones, Anne-Flore Marxer and Jamie Anderson.

“Helen is a great addition to the team as her approach to the backcountry is unique,” said Pitschi. “She has the potential to have a great career and we are proud to welcome her to the family.”

American rider, Eric Willett, took the first 5Star Big Air title of the 2011/12 TTR World Tour season at the second annual Billabong Ante Up competition held atop Whistler Mountain in Canada. The sun was hidden behind the clouds for most of the day, but riders put on a great performance for the crowd of spectators at the top of the mountain where Sebastien Toutant (CAN) came in a close second behind Willett and Dash Kamp (USA) took home third place.

The Ante Up started out with a qualifying round of 30 snowboarders in the early afternoon that was whittled down to 10 men for the finals. The start list was packed full of riders who are usually super consistent on big air kickers like Seppe Smits (BEL), Chas Guldemond (USA), Gjermund Braaten (NOR) and Roope Tonteri (FIN) but they just couldn’t seem to put their landing gear down on the 90-foot gap jump. This opened the door for Eric Willett who took numerous podium spots at Big Air and Slopestyle competitions last season and for Sebastien Toutant who won the Ante Up last year. Eric Willett landed a smooth switch backside double cork 1260 to take $20,000 USD for his win today. Sebastien Toutant was awarded $12,500 USD for landing a Cab double cork 1260 and Dash Kamp walked away with a cool $8,000 for his backside double cork 1080.

Willett is already looking forward to the Southern Hemisphere leg of the tour and had this to say about his win: “I’m stoked. It’s always weird to come out here in July and do a competition in the middle of summer, but it’s really fun and crucial to come out for the start of the season and get those points especially with the new ranking system to get the big air points. I’m pumped to head down to New Zealand with this confidence booster.”

All 32 riders who competed at the Ante Up earned ranking points that will count towards the all-new TTR Big Air Tour Ranking list and will also count towards the TTR Overall Tour Ranking list, as well.

With the 5Star Ante Up wrapped up and winter on the rise in the Southern Hemisphere, riders will soon make the trek down to New Zealand for the 5Sar Burton New Zealand Open where the first slopestyle and halfpipe results will be registered for the TTR Slopestyle Tour Ranking list and the TTR Halfpipe Tour Ranking list. Riders will also have the opportunity to hit the 4Star Billabong Bro Down (ss), also taking place in New Zealand, and the 4Star Stylewars (ss) event going down in Australia.

Riders from around the globe are making the journey to Whistler, Canada for the second annual Billabong Ante Up big air competition set for this Friday, July 1st, 2011. The Ante Up will be the first 5Star stop on the 2011/12 TTR World Tour and will also act as the first event where riders can register results for the all-new TTR Big Air Ranking list. The riders list is full of international talent including Eric Willett (USA), Mark McMorris (CAN), Sebastien Toutant (CAN), Sage Kotsenburg (USA) and Seppe Smits (BEL) who were all major forces at big air events last season. These guys will need to be on top of their game with some other big names on the invite list who will all be battling for the 850 TTR Big Air ranking points and a piece of the $50,000 USD prize purse.

Riders will face tough competition with an invite list full of talent

This year’s Ante Up competition is setup to be a progression clinic with veterans like Chas Guldemond (USA) and Scotty Lago (USA) in the mix with younger contest killers like Tyler Flanagan (USA), Gjermund Braaten (NOR), Charles Reid (CAN), Matts Kulisek (CAN) and Roope Tonteri (FIN). With double-corks becoming stock tricks at big air competitions, there’s no telling what riders might attempt on the 80-foot gap step-down jump that the Whistler park crew has been shaping into perfection over the past two weeks. The event is open to the public and will mark the celebration of Canada Day with special guest, K-OS, a Canadian hip hop star who will be playing DJ sets throughout the day. First event for riders to register results for new TTR ranking system

The TTR World Tour now features a new ranking system that has separate ranking lists for Big Air, Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Overall. With this new ranking system in place, TTR will now award World Tour titles for each of the four separate ranking categories. The Ante Up will be the first event of the 2011/12 season where riders will be able to register results on the Big Air World Tour Ranking list and the Overall World Tour Ranking list. Southern Hemisphere schedule confirmed

After the air settles from all the action at Ante Up, the TTR World Tour will take a short break before heading down to the Southern Hemisphere for events in Australia and New Zealand. The Southern Hemisphere calendar is packed with great events including the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open (ss, hp) and the 4Star Stylewars (ss) event going down in Australia. Jamie Anderson, arguably the most dominant women’s snowboarder in the world today, inked another long-term agreement with Billabong.

Jamie Anderson had an unprecedented year in 2010/11 season. She won nearly every slopestyle event; convincingly winning her second TTR World Title, named the overall Winter Dew Tour Champion, and brought home a gold medal from the European X Games.

Candy Harris, Billabong Brand Director, says, “We are thrilled to be continuing our support of Jamie, she has become a true icon for the sport and we know the future holds no limit to her accomplishments.”

Growing up in South Lake Tahoe, Anderson started snowboarding at age nine as part of the Sierra at Tahoe Team. Very quickly, she rose to the top becoming the youngest Winter X Games medalist by age 15. It was her burgeoning talent that initially caught the attention of Billabong and industry media alike.

“It feels amazing to sign with Billabong for another 3 years, and I’m so proud to work with such a great company,” said Anderson. “I’m excited about expanding the Jamie Anderson Collection and couldn’t be happier about the relationship.”

All this success at the age of 20 has not changed her outlook on the sport of snowboarding she loves so much. She still finds time to go boarding with her friends on those infamous bluebird pow days at Sierra with no photographers, no filmers just pow runs in The Gates.

Anderson never ceases to advance the sport as slopestyle’s leading lady. She continues to film, document, and share her travels filming for Jamie Anderson Visuals. She will be focusing more on her backcountry riding and she will also try her hand at qualifying for the 2014 Olympics in Russia. Jamie will be enjoying some down time at home this summer but will start up competing again at the Burton Open in New Zealand in August.

Billabong, founded in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant in the wave haven of Australia, has since spread its arms wide to embrace every aspect of boardsportery. Just out of interest, do you know what a Billabong is, apart from the purveyors of all things snowboarding, surf and skate? Well, its a mini lake marooned when a river changes its course – there you go.

So back to the point: Billabong have a budding team of snow rippers, both boys and girls, including TTR winner Jamie Anderson, multiple X Games winner Jenny Jones and Anne-Flore Marxer, whose pro jacket is featured in this short review. The men’s team also has a fair few heroes, as well as the likes of Autti, Lago, the flying Jap Fuse and Austria’s Wolle Nyvelt, who has been a mainstay of Absinthe films and is a pioneer in the field of European Noboarding.
