There’s a little less than a week to go till we close our annual Onboard x Dragon Design Contest and as ever we’ve received an avalanche of killer submissions. We want to see more before we make any decisions, though, so if you’ve got a masterpiece in your brain box get all the info you need on how to enter, and then submit your designs to thecrew@onboardmag.com as a low res .pdf no later than Monday March 12 2012.

To give you some inspiration, here’s a few of the designs we’ve received so far. The winner not only bags a pair of APX goggles with their artwork on ‘em, there’s a good chance they could even make it into Dragon’s line for 13/14…

For the fourth season running, we’re stoked to open up another edition of the Onboard/Dragon design contest. Download the template, create your masterpiece, submit your entry and you could win some real-life Dragon APX goggles with your design all over. Peep the details.

- CONTEST RUNS OCTOBER 30 2011 – MARCH 12 2012 -

For this year’s design contest, Dragon are offering up their top end goggle to be your canvas – the APX. So download the template (we’ve provided an illustrator or a pdf version) and go wild. As Dragon say, “It’s definitely a new challenge for artists to be associated with our premium frame.”

In your design you MUST include the Dragon and Onboard logos, but other than that you have free rein to do whatever you want within the APX template.

Once you’ve created your masterpiece of next level goggle design, email your entries to thecrew@onboardmag.com. If they are over a couple of megabytes please create a .pdf preview and send that. Make sure you include your full name and contact details and title your entry Dragon Design Contest 2011/12.

The entries will be judged by Onboard and Dragon and whichever design we think is the sickest will be notified as the winner and will receive 10 pairs of their self-designed goggles once they have been produced.

Once again, the DEADLINE IS MARCH 1 2012. Midnight German time, to be precise.

Entries for previous editions were off the chain, so we’re already stoked to see what you guys come up with this time round.

Shhh... here's a glimpse of Christie Shinn's winning design. As it'll be a part of Dragon's 2012 line we're obliged to keep it hush hush, but here's a teaser.

It sure took a while, but we’re stoked to announce Christie Shinn as the winner of the Onboard/Dragon Design Contest 2011.

Suuuuper sorry this took so long to get out there – there was a bunch of mumbo jumbo to sort out between the winner and the Dragon guys – but we’re pumped we can now let the world know that Canadian Christie Shinn is the winner of the 3rd Onboard/ Dragon Design contest. There were some killer entries this year so thanks to all who entered for making the decision so tough. Check out some of the bangers that ran Christie’s effort close at the bottom of the page.

The Dragon crew dug Christie’s design so much that as well as making her her own goggles they’re also incorporating it into their 2012 line, so they’re keen to keep the full design hush hush. We managed to convince them to let us give you a teaser but you’ll have to wait till next year to see it in all its colourful, fishy glory.

We hit up Christie to find out more about the girl behind the lens…

Age: 30… which I’m told is ‘old as dirt’.

Hometown: Toronto, Canada.

Home mountain: Blue Mountain, Collingwood.

What’s your favourite place to ride? My favorite right now is Heavenly, Lake Tahoe. Really, though, wherever my friends are is the best place to be. They can make a jib spot in the backyard with an upside-down shopping cart as fun as fresh tracks.

How did you hear about the contest? I came across it while browsing the Onboard site.

What inspired your design? My design is equal parts rainbow trout, Salmon Dance and the 80′s Zinka colour palette.

How did you make it? I start all my designs as pencil sketches. In this case, I drew like three pages of fish to get the ones I really wanted to use. After that I inked them in black with a liner brush, then scanned and converted them into vector shapes in Illustrator. Then it was just a matter of colouring in and experimenting with placement. The most important step was getting feedback from my close friends and letting it sit for a couple days before sending it in. I ended up making some minor tweaks right at the end that made all the difference.

What was your reaction when we told you you’d won? I was up late working the night before, so I was still half asleep when I got the email. No matter how many times I read it, my brain refused to believe it. It hit me fully while I was standing at the coffee maker, my hands started shaking and my heart was thumping super hard. I skipped the coffee and phoned everyone I knew instead. It was the beginning of a really really great day.

Well, congrats once more, Christie, and we’re well looking forward to rocking your fishy Rogues on our faces.

After much debating, here is the winning entry and some of the other sick submissions from this year’s Onboard/Dragon design contest.

So, after an avalanche of designs made our way through the pipes and into our inbox, we began the lengthy process of deciding which ones rocked and which ones didn’t make the grade. After some vicious in-fighting amongst the Onboard editorial crew we picked a top 5 and sent them through to the Dragon team, where after some more fisticuffs and name-calling we finally settled on our winner. And it was Tamara Magitteri from Como, Italy whose design stoked us all out most. Congratulations, Tamara!

“This victory is unbelievable!” she said when we called her up to congratulate her. “I decided to enter the contest just for personal satisfaction, because I love snowboarding (I’m a little snowboarder but I love it!) and… wow, I’m in! It’s a great significant victory for me! The idea was born in a particular moment of my life… a not so happy moment… The owl in the design represents the “light after the solution of a problem” and I think that this owl has brought me a beautiful light!”

Tamara’s now firing over the original design so she can rock the mountains next year in her own exclusive pair of peeper protectors, but we’d like to throw a massive shoutout to everyone who entered. There were some killer designs (the rest of our top 5 are shown below) and we were mad pumped on the response, but – as in Highlander – there can be only one… Well done again Tamara, and thanks to all who sent in their work.

Entries have been coming in thick and fast, but there’s still a way to go till the deadline of March 19 2010. We decided to show you a few of the designs that have come in, and rather than get in a big office shit fight about which ones rock and which suck we assigned our moderately trained monkey to randomly pick five to show, giving you an idea of what people have fired in already.
