Norwegian rookie gets wild at Northstar and puts down two different triple combinations in the same session.

So a bunch of riders from Norway pitched up in Northstar the other week with, it seems, intentions of showing the world that when it comes to contemporary kicker riding then they have the moves like Jagger. With Emil’s edit here following hot on the heels of Torgeir Bergrem’s assault of kicker stunts on the same jump, it looks like Norwegian contingent will be even tougher to beat next season…

Last Friday marked the wrap up of the Monster Energy Shred Show Slopestyle, the first Canadian 5Star World Snowboard Tour event of the 2013-2014 season. Weather made it difficult for riders to fully utilize the massive Slopestyle course located in the Blackcomb terrain park. As the day went on, the weather cleared up enough for riders to throw down some impressive runs to try and claim the $15000 top prize.

With an 84.50 it was Norway’s Emil Ulsletten who was atop the podium. His run consisted of a blunt 270 on the down rail, 50/50 frontside 360 with a tuck knee grab on the step down, a frontside double 10 on the first kicker, a backside 360, and a back 9 to cab double 9 on the last feature. Ulsletten Qualified in 10th place with a 68.8; just sneaking into the finals.

In second was Eric Willett from the USA with an 83.33. Willett’s run consisted of a front 270 on the down rail, a boardslide front 270 on the Pole, a front double 10 to front board to fakie out on the rail, and a switch- back 9 to back 7 on the last jump.
Willett won the 6Star Billabong Air & Style Innsbruck earlier this season.

Tyler Nicholson from Ontario, Canada was able to round off the podium. He did a Gap front board on the down flat down, a nose tail 450 off, a cab double 10 on the first jump, a switch tail 450 on the up rail. On the second jump he did a back 10 double to a front 10 on the last jump. His run scored him a 78.33.

The Snowboarding Action will continue tomorrow night in the heart of the village with the Monster Energy Shred Show Big Air. Emil Ulsletten: “ The jumps and rails were really, really good, but the weather made it tough to complete a whole run, it was really fun. I am really really happy! This year has not been the best for me for contests, I needed this one!”

Eric Willett: “The Slopestyle course was good, we definitely had to deal with some interesting weather all day but it worked out, finals turned out really good, it was a bit slushy but that’s that springtime is all about. I am stoked on my run and am glad I ended up on the podium. “

Tyler Nicholson: “This slope contest is by far the best I have ever entered, just because of the organization was so good, it was more based on what the rider’s wanted, they were willing to switch it up if we didn’t like it. The course is just unreal, the jumps were so good and the rails were Gnarly.”

We remember when it was a big deal that Benedek did all four nines in his movie part, and the hype going on when Shaun had all four 10s on lock. It seems like yesterday that double corks were rare as hen’s teeth and recall our shock and awe when Torstein dropped the first triple cork. Now everyone’s getting on the double and triple dip tip, and we’re at the point where rookies like Emil Ulsletten here can film all four doubles in a single park jump session. Madness, though maybe don’t film it on a cellphone from the year 2000 next time…

You’ll no doubt have peeped the shots and read our blow-by-blow account of the madness at Saturday night’s O’Neill Evolution Big Air, but as they say: if it ain’t on video it didn’t happen. The MINI Creative Use of Space Award at the Burton European Open 2012: Jamie Anderson, Emil Ulsletten, Cilka Sadar and Christian Haller show the most creative tricks and take home US$ 5,000!

The third round of the MINI Creative Use of Space Award (CUoS) went down last weekend at the Burton European Open (BEO) in Laax, Switzerland. In spring-like conditions, the world’s best snowboarders unwrapped their skills in the event’s two major competitions: slopestyle and halfpipe. The female and male riders that demonstrated the most creative tricks during the finals took home US$ 5,000 and the MINI CUoS Slopestyle and Halfpipe Awards.

SLOPESTYLE WINNERS

With a smooth backside lipslide on the corner wall combination followed by a massive front side 360 melon over the roof gap, Jamie Anderson (USA) proved her creativity and bagged the MINI CUoS Slopestyle Award in the women’s category. On the men’s side, the judges awarded Emil Ulsletten (NOR) for his rad trick combo on the MINI CUoS Slopestyle Feature: alley-oop 360 over the corner wall followed by a cab to 50/50 to 360 out on the rail set. In the halfpipe finals, the MINI CUoS Awards went to Cilka Sadar (SLO) for a stylish backside alley-oop japan and Christian “Hitsch” Haller (SUI) who stomped an incredible alley-oop seatbelt.

The awarded riders not only took home the prize money, but also collected 25 points towards the final ranking of the Burton Global Open Series (BGOS) and the MINI Countryman which will be given to the male and female with the most points at the 30th Annual US Open in Stratton, Vermont on March 10, 2012.

HALFPIPE WINNERS

The MINI CUoS Slopestyle Feature at the 2012 Burton European Open was created by lead builder Roger Heid and his shape crew. Inspired by urban snowboarding, Heid designed a unique feature that aimed to bring the streets to the mountain – including a corner wall combination, a rail set and a MINI. Thanks to its diversity, the MINI Feature offered the riders great freedom in choosing their line resulting in innovative and unconventional tricks. In addition to the riders, the shape crews also compete for an award: The MINI Feature that is deemed to be the most creative of the four BGOS stops will win US$ 5,000 and the MINI CUoS Slopestyle Feature Award.
