Jye Kearney (AUS) has just been awarded 2012 Stylewars Stairmaster and best trick in front of an electric crowd at the 28 Stairs rail jam.

Part of The Australian Slopestyle Championships hosted at Falls Creek, dedicated spectators braved the chilly weather to witness riders battle it out on a stair set that consisted of a down rail, down flat down bar and down flat down kinked rail. Judges not only scored riders based on skill level but also the variety of tricks performed across all three features.

Jye’s result makes him the winner of this event two years in a row – despite being up against top international names like Maxence Parrot (CAN) and Antoine Truchon (CAN) who won the slopestyle competition held the two days before.

Jye had a number of outstanding runs, including a gap front 270 270 out on the down flat down kinked bar. Maxence was hot on his heels with tricks such as a back 450 270 out. It was tough to choose a winner between the two of them. Other riders that revved up the crowd were Silas Hatch (US) and local Falls Creek rider Tom Clairs (AUS).

World Snowboard Tour Head Judge Giom Morriset admits the competition was close. He said, “Jye was clearly in front at the start, but then Maxence started chasing him throwing down bigger tricks to steal the lead. In the end, we gave the win to Jye because he continued to step it up on every feature every time, doing something different and better than what he did before.”

Jye was awarded best trick for his back 3 to 5-0 on the down bar. He was pumped with his second consecutive Stairmaster win: “It was gnarly out there today… Everyone was chucking down neat 450s so I was stoked to get on top.” Jye takes home AUD$4500 in prize money.

Regarding Jye’s win, Giom also said, “I think it’s great that an Aussie won this competition. It was the internationals who won the slopestyle, so having a local win this rail event shows the world that Australians are good snowboarders too.”

The 28 Stairs event, presentation ceremony and closing party marks the end of Stylewars, The Australian Slopestyle Championships, for another year. With sunshine, helicopters and world-class riding from international and local snowboarders, the Stylewars team look forward to running the same World Snowboard Tour event again next year.

Anotine Truchon and Sylvia Mittermüller seal the deal in the finals of Stylewars. Check the blow-by-blow and a selection of digi-bangers…

Today at Stylewars, the Australian Slopestyle Championships, Antoine Truchon (CAN) showed the world why he is currently ranked the world’s number one slopestyle rider.

Stylewars, part of the prestigious World Snowboard Tour, enables riders from around the world to compete on tour to score points towards an overall world ranking. This afternoon – on the final day of the two-day slopestyle competition – Antoine threw down a switch backside rodeo 540 to frontside 900 into a switch back 1080 double cork to switch 50/50 to cab 270 on the down, taking first place and prize money of AUD$6000. Antoine snatched the Stylewars Grandmaster crown from last year’s winner Tor Lundstrom (SWE) who ended up placing third, despite being a favourite to win after ranking highest yesterday after day one of competition.

Giom Morriset, Head Judge and former US Halfpipe Champion, was thrilled to see riders throw down their best tricks battle it out on Falls Creeks’ phenomenal park set up. He reported, “Today we saw a switch in the scoreboard from Tor yesterday to Antoine today, who won by showing an incredible variety of tricks and skills. The level of competition, on the whole, definitely stepped up from the previous day.” Antoine, the new 2012 Grandmaster said, “I’m pretty stoked to be here at Stylewars this year, not just because of winning but because I’m here shredding with friends and enjoying the incredible course Falls Creek Australia has been able to give us.”

Second place went to Maxence Parrot (CAN). He improved his performance on day two, cleanly landing a great range of tricks. Yesterday he only had one double cork; today he had two. Impressed with the standard of snowboarding that was on display, Giom continued to explain, “Today’s Carlton Dry 30 ended up being a one-of-a-kind show, with a few riders putting forward their first attempts at some of the sport’s hardest and highest scoring tricks.” A perfect example, Maxence stole the show with his first attempt at a cab double cork 1080. He says, “I’m so happy about it, I just learned this trick today.”

For the women at Stylewars, Biba Turnbull (AUS) won the most points for day two of competition. But it was Silvia Mittermuller (GER) who ended up placing number one overall, taking home AUD$2000. Her winning run consisted of a backside 360 nosegrab to frontside 360 stalefish into a 50/50 up to noseslide down. Silvia also won the women’s Carlton Dry 30 best trick with a frontside 720 nosegrab, hot on the heels of Jess Rich (AUS) who also stomped a 720. Thrilled with the event Silvia says, “I’m just blown away by my entire trip to Australia. Stylewars is one of the funnest competitions I’ve ever been to.”

With the close of the slopestyle competition for the event, riders will be out celebrating at Falls Creek Resort tonight. However, the excitement of Stylewars competition doesn’t stop there. Tomorrow night hosts the Stylewars grand finale, 28 Stairs – a rail jam run under lights out the front of the Frying Pan Inn, with AUD$4500 up for grabs. Stay tuned for results.

The good blokes down under have kicked off another edition of Stylewars, with a mindblowing barrage of doubles, 10s and 12s the order of day 1. Check out what went down…

Today marked the opening of Stylewars, the Australian Slopestyle Championships – Australia’s premier annual snowboarding event. Part of the prestigious World Snowboard Tour, the day was a huge success with the largest pool of entrants Stylewars has ever seen, including four of the world’s top slopestyle riders, and spectacular talent on display.

After a massive construction effort by the park crew at Falls Creek Resort, and abundant above average snowfall, the course was as good as any event from the past year on tour. Better yet, the competition was run under the best weather conditions Stylewars had seen in years. Riders could not wait to get out there and compete.

The contingent of international snowboarders including world number one slopestyle rider Antoine Truchon (CAN), defending Stylewars Grandmaster Tor Lundstrom (SWE), Maxence Parrot (CAN) and Jordan Phillips (CAN) took charge of the course with outstanding performances in an effort to score the best rank for the two-day competition. Australian and Kiwi riders also managed great results, with standout performances from Ben Comber, Nick Brown, Robbie Walker, Nick Wood and Courtney Phillipson.

Overall, the level of riding was exceptional with a fast-paced non-stop showcase of doubles, 10s and 12s. Impressed Head Judge and former US Open Halfpipe Champion Guillaume Morriset said, “Today was the best standard of snowboarding seen at an Australian competition this year.” Tor threw down several fantastic runs over the two-hour jam session format to defend his title, including a mind-blowing set consisting of a front 10 to back 12. He said, “It was a really good day today. Everyone was riding amazing and I look forward to seeing to what happens tomorrow. I might be in first place, but anything can happen.”Antoine stomped a switch back double cork 1080, earning him the men’s Carlton Dry 30 (best trick) of the day. Aussie Biba Turnbull won the women’s Carlton Dry 30 with a stylish frontside 3 stalefish.

All of the day’s heavy riding was caught on camera – via overhead chopper, remote control helicopter, phantoms cameras and static angle cameras plotted all over the course. Quality coverage of this year’s event is guaranteed.

With more sunny skies forecast tomorrow, the fight for the Grandmaster title will be tight. All riders will be pushing the limits, vying for their share of the $20,000 prize pool on the final day of slopestyle competition.

Stylewars 2010 – Day 1 >>

But that ain’t gonna stop an Aussie party, as DZ and Calling All Cars rock out in the evening…

Looks like it’s been dumping down under, which is good for all snowboarders apart from those who run or compete in contests. As a result day 1 of Stylewars was a no-go but fingers crossed conditions will improve as talk is the set up’s the sickest it’s ever been. Hopefully the guys got to ride some trees, and the edit crew pulled together some interviews mixed with some of last year’s heaviness to keep you occupied. Check it.

Here’s what the organisers’ chat was…

“Overnight, Mother Nature brought to Falls Creek a thick fog, causing the official commencement of Stylewars competition to be delayed until tomorrow. Nonetheless, riders have been having a good time, shredding good snowfall in clearer areas of Falls Creek throughout the day.

With an immaculate terrain park in waiting, it is hoped the inclement weather will swiftly pass and give riders their chance to shine tomorrow.

The Stylewars crew has also kept themselves busy partying hard. Last night’s opening party caused much excitement amongst the snowboarders involved, and was topped off with a rockin performance from bands DZ and Calling All Cars.

The party is yet to continue into tong into tonight, with Bag Raiders playing at The Man Hotel. Stay tuned for more updates and a wrap up of Day Two.

Some of the world’s best snowboarding talent has just checked in for Australia’s premier snowboarding event, Stylewars, hosted at Falls Creek, Victoria.

Due to kick off tomorrow morning Aussie time, riders have arrived and have been welcomed with some of the best snowfall that the Australian 2010 season has seen. And upon inspecting the park, the response is that the riders are thrilled and just can’t wait to hit it.

The park is even bigger and better than last year, and features two huge jumps (a 70-foot step-down and an 85-foot gap jump), a giant snow butter-box and an up-and-over pyramid wall-ride.

Stylewars has been an integral part of the prestigious TTR World Snowboard Tour for eight years, bringing to Australia a dynamic mix of young, fresh talent to compete with the biggest names in snowboarding from around the globe.

This year will be no exception, with an astounding five world-class international riders under the age of 19, each with a real chance of being crowned Stylewars Grand Master.

2010 welcomes TTR’s current World Number One, Gjermund Braaten (NOR). Competing in Australia for the very first time, TTR Head Judge Mel Simmons says, “There’s a lot of contention this year, but he’s definitely one to look out for.”

A fast mover-and-shaker through the TTR ranks, 16-year-old Braaten will be battling it out with headlining rider 17-year-old Sebastien Toutant (CAN). After making history at Stylewars last year, ‘Seb Toots’ is back again to blow the minds of spectators for another year, and stern on defending his Grand Master title.

Also visiting Australia for the first time are major Grand Master title contenders: recent FIS gold medallist, 16-year-old Mark McMorris (CAN), 16-year-old Tor Lundstrom (SWE), and 18-year old Kevin Backstrom (SWE).

In addition, Falls Creek welcomes international riders from Austria, USA, and New Zealand, as well as Aussies, including world-renowned Ryan Tiene, and young guns Chris De Campo and Jye Kearney.

To officially declare Stylewars open, the launch party will be held tonight featuring Aussie rockers Calling All Cars. A snowboarding festival notorious for back-to-back world-class snowboarding and entertainment, Stylewars 2010 is set to rock Falls Creek for the next three days and four-nights to come.

The Southern Hemisphere leg of the Swatch TTR World Tour moves on to Australia next week where the 4Star Stylewars competition will take place at Falls Creek from August 23rd to the 25th, 2010.

A selected number of riders will be making the trek from New Zealand where the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open just wrapped up. Among those riders is current TTR Tour leader, Gjermund Braaten (NOR), who will register his fourth result of the 2010 season. Stylewars features different event formats over the course of three days, but it is the slopestyle format that will count as an official TTR result.

Four Riders from the Current TTR Top Ten to Attend Stylewars
Back in June, the 2010/11 Swatch TTR Tour season kicked off for the men with the 5Star Billabong Ante Up and continued with the Burton New Zealand Open, the second major event on the tour for the men. Some of the younger riders on tour have been taking advantage of the early season events including current World No. 1, Gjermund Braaten, World No. 4, Mark McMorris (CAN), World No. 9, Sebastien Toutant (CAN), World No. 8, Kevin Backstrom (SWE) as well as upcoming talents Eric Willett (USA) and Matts Kulisek (CAN). With this mix of heavy international competition combined with the local talent of Australia, the 2010 Stylewars competition is set to go off.

Finishing Up the Season Down Under and Outlook for the Northern Hemisphere
After the Stylewars competition wraps up, the TTR Tour will return to New Zealand for the 3Star Billabong Bro Down taking place on September 11th, 2010 at Snowpark. Stylewars and Bro Down will mark the close of the 2010/11 Southern Hemisphere leg of the TTR Tour. Events and riders will take a break for the autumn months before winter returns to the Northern Hemisphere. The first 6Star event of the season for the Northern Hemisphere will be the recently announced Oakley Air & Style Beijing that is scheduled for December 1-5, 2010.
