A good clean rodeo is surely second only to a method when it comes to style. Those who can do them know it makes them kings of the world for about a second a half. Those of us who can’t are forced to marvel at the neat simplicity of both spinning and flipping at the same time, without dizzying us. And whatever kind of snowboarding floats your boat, the same applies: throw a rodeo over a pillow, out of a pipe, round a tree, off a wall, even in the dark, and the stoke will beam across your face all day. Burton know this too. So naturally they’ve cut and pasted an orgy of them together with the kind of reckless abandon usually displayed by small children filling a bag of pick and mix right to the brim. In the world of 1260s and triple corks, 540s are easily overlooked these days. While a slow, stylish frontside 540 isn’t as technically hard as spinning your face off, it is much harder to make look good. The Winter X Games Real Snow Backcountry contest was started last year as a way to expose the masses to a different aspect of snowboarding other than the traditional contest scene. Nicolas Müller, John Jackson, Jussi Oksanen and Mark Sollors were all chosen to submit video parts, and in the end Nicolas ended up with a gold medal and Jussi took home a bronze and the fan-favorite title. In this Big Picture, the guys talk about what it was like getting into the filming groove extra early to shoot their parts and how that momentum shaped the rest of their season.

Snow was generally in short supply last year, except for a handful of places like Whistler. When it doesn’t stop snowing for weeks at a time, Jussi Oksanen, John Jackson, Mikkel Bang, Mikey Rencz, Mark Sollors and Jeremy Jones had to stick to the trees because the avalanche danger and visibilty in the high alpine was so bad. What resulted was Part 1 of the deepest, most technical, and easily envied footage from last year. Even with just one watch, these images will replay in your mind over and over, so…sorry.

Too much snow isn’t something that would usually be considered a problem while filming snowboarding. With over 2.5 meters of snow in one week and the avalanche danger too high to be in the alpine, Mark Sollors, Jussi Oksanen, John Jackson, Mikkel Bang and Mikey Rencz spent the week in the trees getting at least knee deep and getting even more face shots.
