Boardworld and Olliepop Films present the final episode of ‘Oi Mate!’ – a new series from the land down under. Proudly supported by Forum Snowboards, FYVE Snowboards, Mint Tours, Rhythm Snowboard Shop and Perisher.

In episode 4 we get our last taste of Aussie pow while exploring around the backcountry-side of Thredbo. We get a few early morning pipe hits with Nate Johnstone, before spending the day at Thredbo and back to Perisher with Matt Sedunary. Fyve skate shred Ben Currie hits up Jindabyne Skatepark and a few more lads get in on a jump session at Thredbo Resort. We wrap up the episode with the best of day two action at STYLEWARS, presented by Carlton Dry at Falls Creek.

Jye Kearney (AUS) has just been awarded 2012 Stylewars Stairmaster and best trick in front of an electric crowd at the 28 Stairs rail jam.

These are their words:

“Oi Mate! follows a group of snowboarders as they live and breathe the Australian snow season. This four-part series travels all over Australia in the search of the best snowboarding on offer.

During July we went all over the place. From a private shoot up at Thredbo Resort with DC Pro Ryan Tiene and Charles Beckinsale, to a night shoot and a river gap at Falls Creek, park laps at Perisher with Jye Kearney and some jibbing at Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort with the Fyve & Forum boys.”

It’s a case of ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!’ as Jye Kearney becomes the first Australian to win the Stylewars Stairmaster title at the 2011 28 Stairs rail event. Jibbing Dutchman Cees Wille bags Best Trick. Watch the highlights…

Claiming the win at Stylewars’ notorious 28 Stairs event at Falls Creek’s Village Bowl ain’t easy. The only riders to ever be crowned have been Mark McMorris (Canada, 2010), Sebastien Toutant (Canada, 2009), Charles Reid (Canada, 2008), and Will Jackways (New Zealand, 2007). Now Jye Kearney can claim membership of this exclusive club.

The 28 Stairs event began with a 45-minute qualification round that whittled the rider list down to 11 finalists. Competition was hot with standout performances from many Aussies including Matt Sedunary, Jason Maxfield, Cameron Staveley and Tim Nelson.

Event organiser and founder Richard Hegarty was amazed with the quality of homegrown riding: “It was great to finally see an Australian win this event; it is a very daunting set up. Jye has been on fire this winter, already winning $14,000 of prize money at rail jams all over Australia and New Zealand this year.”

Best trick was given to 19-year-old Dutch Cees Wille for his nollie hardway back 180 to switch 50/50 cab 180 out on the down bar. Wille, who flew all the way to Stylewars from The Netherlands just for this one-night event, says: “The rail set up was super fun. I think it is one of the best I have ever seen, even compared to some of the Euro competitions I’ve been to.”

His first time to Australia, Wille continues, “I am so impressed with this event. When I first got here, I couldn’t believe how many cameras there were. It was really well organised and the coverage is really great. I hope I get invited to come again next year.”

28 Stairs marks the close of Stylewars’ 10-year anniversary. Blessed with phenomenal snowboarding talent from Australia and overseas – combined with perfect sunny and clear conditions across all three days – the team and all riders involved already can’t wait for Stylewars 2012.

In an exciting turn of events, 19-year-old Tor Lundström from Sweden has just been announced Stylewars Grandmaster 2011.

Successfully climbing his way to the top from fourth place, Lundström stole first place from young Aussie Scotty James during the two-hour competition window today. He wasted no time throwing down as many tricks as he could, including a front 10 and a back 10. His podium finish is a combination of high scores from the judges and the traditional Stylewars rider vote – where each rider from the event gets to voice their thoughts on who threw down the best performances across both days.

Thrilled with his win, he says, “I’m super stoked. The standard of riding was really high – everyone sent it.” Indeed, competition was tough. Aussie Clint Allan was hot on Lundström’s heels, and Max Buri from Switzerland really stepped it up today ranking second overall in the rider vote.

Stylewars’ best trick goes to Norway’s Gjermund Braaten for his double cork back 10 at the start of competition yesterday. Although the slopestyle component of Stylewars has come to a close, the competition is not over yet. Tomorrow night brings the famous 28 Stairs rail jam event, where a further $8000 is up for grabs. The crowning of 2011 Stylewars Stairmaster will be tough. In the spotlight will be dark horse Cees Wille who has flown all the way from The Netherlands, Kiwi rider Nick Brown, fresh from his rail comp win at the New Zealand Winter Games, and Jye Kearney, who won best Aussie rider at last year’s event. 28 Stairs will be hosted out the front of the Frying Pan in Falls Creek’s Village Bowl from 7pm.

Leukaemia is something that can affect anyone, it can attack ur friends, your family, the ones you love most. It is beatable but organisations like the Australian Leukaemia foundation need our support to continue research and support to fight against this disease.

Nice to see some winter in the midst of summer, though it looks like Snowpark could do with another dusting or three. In the first of this season’s Diaries Downunder Jye Kearney gets all Mean Streets in the intro before jetting to NZ to hook up with the Kiwi crew, before razzing up to Snowpark to hit up the late arvo/night session. The boys are pumped to be back on god’s spuff. Nick Hyne‘s so stoked he even forgets to do up his back binding for a few hits of the box.
