Back in the day KJ was a staple member of the Standard Films crew, bagging openers or enders regularly with his sublime mix of tech and steeze. Then he had enough of pro snowboarding, got off the merry-go-round and disappeared from the media spotlight. Then last winter we heard rumours that he was back and filming for TB20 and, not only that, he’d put down a triple backie to boot. And here’s his part which is pretty strong and additionally serves as a nice link between Standard’s past and present.

The final installment of the Standard Films-focussed episodes of Powder & Rails is live and centres in on more of snowboarding’s legends’ history with the snowboard movie making outfit, and what it takes to get it done. Awesome.

As well as banging riding from back in the day, this episode also is a reminder of how things used to work in the days before digital and just what it takes to get shots with these guys. Hint: mad skills ain’t enough. You’re gonna have to be down for the hard graft.

After a couple of MDP-produced team movies, Forum and co. hired Sean Johnson (previously of Wildcats fame) to produce Video Gangs. As well as having the regular roster of Forum über pros like Bjorn Leines, Devun Walsh, Joni Malmi (though no JP Walker as, rumour had it, he’d signed a deal to only film with Mack Dawg), Video Gangs also included Jeenyus riders (RIP Jeenyus, you were awesome) Eddie Wall, Andreas Wiig and Chad Otterstrom, and also introduced the world to a young Finnish rookie fresh off the production line – Lauri Heiskari. In addition to all this, it also inspired a hack on the internet to write a paragraph with an excess of parentheses in it nearly 8 years later.

After a promising start to last winter on the frigid streets of Helsinki, Eero was dealt a bad hand and knackered his ACL meaning most of last winter was spent rehabbing like hell. Ettala’s not one to lay about idly, though, throughout his period off the shred sled he’s been keeping busy by filming his buddies skating and snowboarding for his HTML home, ettala.com. And as of the last couple of months he’s had the Ok to start skating again, tentatively. Though ‘tentatively’ in Ettala terms means ‘holy fucking shit that kid could be a pro skater.’

Now he’s strapped back in and had his first shred session in half a year at High Cascade. Textbook front boards, switch double backies… he’s still got it. This is also memorable for having legendary snowboarder Kevin Jones in it. Not only is he in it, he takes a rather impressive neck snapper off the obstacle course box. Awesome!
