There’s no two ways about it: Holden is one cool-as-hell company. Check out some of the highlights from their outerwear and streetwear line for 2012-13 with your host Mikey LeBlanc.

For this preview, Mikey whipped out the Fishtail parka (one of Holden’s pieces that are made in collaboration with Stüssy); discuss the Impossible Project colab (throwing love to Polaroid); present some of their sportswear-inspired layers; and wrap it up with their 20k washed denim shred pants. Tasty.

As well as some fastforward action and a huge slam, what we learnt from watching this is that Mikey LeBlanc needs his own TV show while Nicolas Müller should not give up his day job just yet.

Primo footage from back in the day showcasing urban shredgends breaking ground. Watch it.

If you don’t know who JP Walker is you can’t call yourself a snowboarder. Simple as that. JP and his cronies were responsible for ushering in the second wave of jibbing and arguably laid the blueprint for anyone who takes urban snowboarding seriously these days.

A couple weeks back he released some raw, uncut footage from downtown sessions in the 1999-2000 season which was an awesome chance to relive some legends breaking boundaries. Sure, the rails and tricks look tame by todays’s standards but at the time it was nothing short of cutting edge. As David Benedek once told us, “Watching those videos back then me and my friends were all sure they must have a special channel in their bases that allowed them to lock onto nosepresses. We just couldn’t imagine how they would be possible without.”

And now Walker’s dropped Reel Raw 1999-2000 Take Two, which is more of the same goodness. Check out JP Walker himself along with Jeremy Jones, Brian Thien, Mikey LeBlanc and Nate Bozung sessioning The Brickyard, Lindsey Gardens and The Rail Garden. Is it JP or Jeremy that has the hissy fit and gives his board a beating before chucking it over a wall?

And here’s the first batch, aka Take One in case you missed it. Loving it.

Have a look at this preview of what new products Holden have on offer this coming 2011/2012 season.

Have a look at this preview of what new products Holden have on offer this coming 2011/2012 season.

Holden Outwear was created in 2002 by Mikey LeBlanc and Scott Zergebel. LeBlanc allegedly chose the name ‘Holden’ after being inspired by the spirit of youthful revolt in Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of JD Salinger’s novel Catcher in the Rye - see, some snowboarders can even read! They continue to produce top end products and their line up for 2011/2012 looks no different.

First up is the rad college-inspired Varsity jacket which is not only a great looking jacket but also boasts a 20k breathability and 20k waterproof super stretchy fabric. All the patches on the jacket are made from leather which means that they don’t fade and crack.

Next is the LNP signature jacket which is a nice simple design with a detachable hood which lets you wear it off the slopes too. Laurent-Nicolas Paquin wanted a stylish insulated jacket without any excessive features and by the looks of it he got just that. There is also a Black Sabbath inspired patch on the arm in homage of LNP’s favourite band.

The Nico from Holden is a super nice women’s jacket with a slick motorcycle jacket style storm flap. Made out of 100% recycled material this could be the perfect jacket to cure your environmental guilt. It also features a super stylish off-set cut at the bottom which, along with the striking topaz colour scheme, will be sure to make you stand out on the hill.

Also on offer for 2011/2012 is the women’s Band jacket which, like the Nico, features 100% recycled fabric. This entry priced product is simple but still comes with loads of style and the button detail on the front looks killer.

Check out the preview above to see what’s new.

Wait a minute! It’s been another week already? Then it is high time for our popular “This Week in Snowboarding”. Once again our underage, malnourished interns’ sore fingers have dug out a lot of internet gems from the world of shred. If you feel you are too busy right now to go through our collection of awesomeness please be reminded of Bertrand Russell’s wise words: “Time you enjoy wasting isn’t wasted time.”

SATURDAY

Technically, most of these are links from last Friday, but what the heck, they are just too good: The CWGKA Snowboard Throwdown gets filmed in a classy tilt-shift look, Our Cup of Tea is a conclusive lo-fi production from Sweden, and holy cola: The Split the Sin is quite a banger from Canada and Sweden. Videograss jibs Brighton, the Windells session no. 4 looks dope, Hannah Teter wins a do-good award, JP Walker gets humbled in Barcelona, Travis Parker still knows how to cash in, the Volcom Avalanche takes place somewhere in Chile (and offers some more tilt-shift views), Spatziba does High Cascade in decent style, DC might have sold their Mountain Lab, and everyone should know how to do a proper method. I said EVERYONE!

SUNDAY

Back in the day Grenade brought us the excellent movie Full Metal Edges. Today they bring us some weird copyright shit. The Garbage Gang is back with yet another clip from Les2Alpes.

Two more Right Brain Left Brain mini teasers see the light of the internet.
The day kicks off with some fantastic crashes from Windells. Then there’s yet another Comune teaser. The YES crew discuss girls at the Camp of Champions. Polish jib legend Wojtek Pawlusiak gets his shred on in Les2Alpes. We give away tons of shred gear, and in other news Mikey LeBlanc is a great actor, JP Walker nabs a sunblock sponsor, and Jonas Carlson is the man.

WEDNESDAY

The Deeper crew scores some great pow in Utah. The FIS calls Swiss snowboarders roosters. The HCSC is always good for some really good summer shred action. And so is Dan Brisse at the CoC.

Scene from ‘Night of the Living Shred Doodle.’

After 400 years of debate the US and Canada agree on the same avalanche danger scale.

FRIDAY

The Windells session 5 includes a little pie fight. DVS releases a nifty Eero Ettala ad, featuring both his supreme skate and snowboard skills. Someone has too much time on their hands and produces a best of 2010/11 teasers teaser.

That’s all the shabazz for this week, folks. Now have a good weekend – and don’t forget: It’s all about being proactive!

The Rail Prodigy on Europe, Saving Money, Girls and Salomon.

This is Jed as seen by our staff photog Sami Tuoriniemi.

The annual Ispo tradeshow in Munich is not only a great time to get some wacko branded t-shirts and have countless complimentary drinks, it is also a place to meet some of the dopest riders around. When we ran into US Canadian rail-prodigy and Videograss crew member Jed Anderson, we grabbed a dictaphone and fired it away. An 18-year-old that minutes before Mikey LeBlanc had labeled “possibly the best snowboarder in the world” we figured we should help him get some more attention in the Old World.

Welcome and thanks for taking the time, Jed. Let me start with an insult: Java from Salomon shot us an email telling us who’d be coming to Ispo. I was like ‘Yeah, Jed Anderson is coming over. We could run an interview!’ But some of my workmates said ‘Isn’t that kid is only riding rails and stuff. Is it interesting enough?’ What do you think is the reason Europe seems to be hesitant towards urban riding?

I don’t really know. I’m just riding that stuff because it is fun. I ride everything but it doesn’t really matter if people don’t like it.

Can you walk us through your development into such a sick rider? Like who introduced you to the sport and who were your main influences?

My brother started snowboarding when I was five or six or something. So I just started going up with him. And when it comes to riding rails and stuff I skateboarded a lot and still do, and I guess I just tried to imitate that on snow. But I still love riding powder and everything. I live in a city where it snows, and it is cheap to hit rails. It costs a lot less money than driving to the mountain and buying a ticket. But if I can do it I’d rather do that sometimes.

Jed's back lip skills won't get rusty anytime soon.

And who have been the main influences on your riding?

So many people. Just a lot of my friends, and Mikey LeBlanc’s old movie Love/Hate, and those movies. And the people I’m riding with today, like Louif, Laurent, and a bunch of French-Canadians and all my friends in the States. People that influence me now are all my friends and that’s pretty cool.

At what point did you take the decision to focus on urban riding, like hitting rails and jibbing and stuff like that?

I’m pretty open to do all kinds of riding. I just have a lot of fun riding that stuff, and it is easy to film that stuff. It is a lot less stress – and a lot less work I guess (laughs). And since I don’t live in a mountain town I don’t have easy access to film some amazing backcountry. And I don’t have a snowmobile or anything. But hopefully one day. So I am open to ride anything; it is just the easiest thing for me to access.

Do you think it is easier to relate to this kind of riding for the average shred out there?

For sure! Just think that there’s some kid somewhere in the middle of the prairie, like in Minnesota. They don’t have huge mountains to go snowboarding. I can see how those kids can’t relate to the powder riding. Maybe it is different over here, but any kid can grab a snowboard and go hit a rail, or build a drop-in-ramp or whatever. They can relate to this and I think that’s super-cool. And it is a bit easier to be creative that way as well.

This kid can even shred without plastic straps.
Who are you filming with this season?

Videograss.

What do you know about the movie? Any more additions to the crew?

Chris Grenier is now filming for them as well. I think Gus Engle is gonna have some stuff. Who else is new? Jon Kooley, Will Tuddenham, Jordan Mendenhall… all those guys. I think it’s gonna be a good movie.

Ripping Hintertux. Photo: Oli Gagnon

Sounds like it! It’s not your first time in Europe?

No, second time. I came earlier this season with Salomon. We went to Barcelona for some skateboarding, and then we went to Hintertux in Austria.

Yeah, we’ve seen the stuff you did up there for that Salomon shoot. That looked fun.

Oh yeah it was.

Jed likes to hang out with Chris Grenier

What do you think about Europe. What’s the main difference for you?

There’s a lot of better looking girls. For sure! I like Europe a lot. I think people – for the most part – have a lot more of a laid-back personality. They are more realistic with their values. Things make more sense over here. They don’t stress on bullshit, which is cool. At least that’s my experience. I’m sure there are countries that are the same, but this experience comes from the places I have been.

How was it to ride in the Alps?

That was pretty awesome. Hintertux is kind of Wolle’s and Werni’s mountain, and even though it was early season they knew where to go and what to do. It was pretty cool to get to ride with those guys in those huge mountains.

Speaking of Europe: You are riding for Salomon, and the brand doesn’t really have a heritage of urban riding. How come you ride for them and what do you get out of this?

I just think that the people who work there and who are running it are pretty great people. I have a lot of trust in them. They are letting the new riders do new shit and all the stuff they wanna do and try to develop the brand more. I am pretty appreciative when it comes to that. I feel lucky to be able to come in and change it a bit for the better. That’s something I want to do. It’s cool that they have trust in me to do that. It’s hard with most companies to have your own grasp of what’s going on, and you don’t have much control in those companies. I feel Salomon gives their riders a lot of control in the company.

I heard you are headed for Eastern Europe?

Yeah, we are going to film some rails in Prague and maybe Poland.

Just filming rails? Prague has quite some reputation…

I’d love to go to Sweden! (laughs)

What for?

For rails! Well, I’d definitely like to come back to Europe a lot.

Any other plans for the season?

Just trying to film a lot. Trying to film some powder. I wanna go to Alaska, and Mt. Baker, and trying to jump a bit. I just don’t want to have an all-rail part again!

Cool. Thanks for taking the time and all the best for the season. Hope to see you back in Europe before too long!
