The World Snowboard Tour recently partnered with mountain specific carpooling website Mountain Rideshare with a move towards encouraging cost effective, sustainable and social travel to their events all over the globe.

There’s a whole bunch of CO2 pumped out into the atmosphere by snowboarders travelling to and from the mountains, so our friend Tosh – a longtime Chamonix seasonaire – setup Mountain Rideshare to encourage snowboarders to buddy up and carpool on their rides throughout the alipne regions of the world, thereby reducing their impact on big Mamma Nature. Now, the TTR have come onboard to setup carpools for all the events of this season’s World Snowboard Tour. The TTR’s Jack Reeves comments “We’re going to work with the guys at Mountain Rideshare to setup carpools to every World Snowboard Tour event. This will make it easy for those to share travel costs and perhaps meet new people. There’s a chance that we’ll get even more spectators who might not have made it otherwise. As an industry that relies on snow continuing to fall, for business and pleasure, we need to do all in our power to protect our winters!”

At a time when fuel prices are the highest they’ve ever been, climate change on every governments agenda and the fact that the web and social media have changed the way we do things and meet people, there has never been a better time to promote and use a website like Mountain Rideshare.

Tosh himself is pumped on the WST backing. “I’m super stoked on the partnership with the World Snowboard Tour,” he said, “as this will really validate and encourage carpooling to the world wide community of snowboarders. In turn I hope that even more people start to use the site to share space in vehicles when taking part in mountain related travel. We need to speak to the masses to make the site really work for people and hope that the site gets the support not only from the snowboarding industry but from the mountain industry as a whole.”

Save money, be green, meet peeps…

Though it seems like the Icelandic Ash Cloud of Doom that grounded thousands of flights across Europe recently is now dispersing, it’s never a bad time to think of other ways that you can travel from your cribs to the hills that don’t involve burning tons of kerosene and locking yourself in a pressurised cigar tube.

Tosh, 13-year Chamonix veteran and renowned rocker of mitts before they were even moderately acceptable, created Mountain RideShare to offer up the option of carpooling your way across the world to enjoy the mountains without taking such a big CO2-laced dump on them. He explains:

“Being a Chamonix homeboy, there were many occasions when I’d be in London keeping my eyes on weather forcasts like a hawk. At the first sign of a storm I would quickly look at flight comparison websites to see if I could find a flight for the same day or very soon after, but in most cases flights would be super-expensive and out of my budget. Then I’d call around friends on the off chance someone knew someone who was driving out, but often I would get no leads so I would be sat there gutted because I may not be able to be in Cham in time to rinse the freshies. This prompted the idea for the Mountain RideShare, as there was nothing like it out there to help people in this sort of situation. When I thought about it more, I realised not only was the financial side of the idea good, but it also had other positive benefits – one of the most important being the fact that by ridesharing we can reduce our carbon emissions by a little. We could also make new friends with the mutual interest of the mountains.”

If you’re driving from A to B and fancy a bit of company or some dudes to help share the petrol costs, or are looking for a ride yourself, then you log on, enter your details of where you’re going from and to and get the whole dealio dialled.

Cheap, environmentally sound, and not susceptible to delays from invisible ash clouds should Iceland gets the flatulence again, the question is why wouldn’t you want to check this out?

Have a gander – mountainrideshare.com
