For the first stop in Munich, we’re having a special Weißwurst celebration with Planet Sports at their flagship store Oberanger 16 at 2pm, to make sure everyone is invigorated and ready for the party mayhem that’ll be kicking off at 9pm in the Art Babel close to the Hauptbahnhof.

Want to see more of our treasured home base Munich? The Givin crew, or Keegan Valaika and Forest Bailey, to be more specific, recently went to Munich to attend ISPO tradeshow and take part in the Nike 6.0 Air&Style rail jam. While they were here they put together this nifty edit of them skating the shit out of Munich.

And here’s another secret: At Ispo Keegan gave us his hard drive and we dragged off some of their recent snowboarding footage. If it weren’t for us being such losers in everything computer you’d already have watched a cool Onboard Gnarly Clothes edit. But bear with us, we’ll figure it out. Next week. We promise.

The Munich Air&Style was in the tradition of its predecessors and once again kicked snowboarding up a notch, with Peetu Piiroinen claiming the win at the last. Full report plus highlight video.

On Saturday, the entire Onboard editorial crew set out to report from the TTR 6Star Nike 6.0 Air&Style Munich. And I promise, we meant to get a report up as soon as the event ended. Unfortunately, there was not one but two different VIP lounges with free booze and on top of that an aftershow party with Nike employees constantly slipping us drink vouchers. Ah, I guess that comes with big corporations entering our sport… On the upside the Munich Air&Style was in the tradition of its predecessors and once again kicked snowboarding up a notch.

The prizegiving. Photo: Sami Tuoriniemi

Yes, there was a lot of hucking and double-corking, but the four super-finalists Peetu Piiroinen, Seppe Smits, Halldor Helgason and Nils Arvidsson each in their own way showed where the sport is developing in terms of kicker riding. Peetu threw down a Cab 1260 on the straight jump and a frontblunt 270 out on the rail section and took home the win (as well as a large share of the 75,000 euro prize purse, the coveted “Air & Style Ring of Glory” and 1000 TTR points). Second place finisher, Seppe Smits, was super consistent all night stomping just about every single trick he attempted. His best scoring trick was his own variation of the Cab 1260 combined with a frontside noseslide to pretzel out in the final round, but he also snuck a Cab 1440 in there for good measure. Coming in third place was Halldor Helgason, who was pushing his limits with an attempted crazy double back rodeo 12 Japan. Even though he did not land this “Lobsterflip” his riding was the clear favourite with the 16,500 spectators.

Peetu Piiroinen on his way to victory. Photo: Sami Tuoriniemi

Strangely enough the Nike 6.0 Stairset Battle Finals, which went down before the big air comp, hardly gets any mentioning in the official press releases. However, having a full-on jam session in a stadium was quite a unique thing, and the level or riding was insanely high. Half of the riders had to qualify at various events throughout the season, and the other half consisted of some heavy hitters of the urban kind. In the end it was Mike Casanova who took the victory (and 10,000 euros cash), followed by Jamie Nicholls and Forest Bailey. To be honest the whole thing was quite hectic as the jam session itself lasted only 30 minutes before an even shorter final between the top 8 went down. It was quite hard to follow what each riders was throwing down. Maybe some other hack who was a little more focussed on the riding can add the missing tricks in this write-up.

Mike Casanova on the money. Photo: Sami Tuoriniemi

Now with the Air&Style series done and over where will the contest aficionado turn to? Here’s what the TTR says:

With the Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich wrapped up, all eyes will shift to Oslo, Norway where The Oakley Arctic Challenge will go off from February, 14th to the 19th, 2011. The Oakley Arctic Challenge is the last 6Star stop before the Swatch TTR tour finale in America at the 6Star Burton US Open, where both the men’s and women’s TTR World Tour Champion titles will be awarded. The end of February will also see the men compete at the 5Star Burn River Jump in Italy on the 22nd to the 25th of Febraury 2011, as well as the 4Star Sony Ericsson Snowboard Fest on the 18th and 19th of February 2011 Head to ttrworldtour.com for new videos, photos, updated rankings and webcast schedules.

A.G.Trio, the fm4 soundpark band of the year 2010, capturing the charts, festivals and dance floors of this world with their unique mixture of sound. Dirty electro house with nasty and catchy vocals, all presented by the tree Austrians within an intoxicating live-act.

Since 1999 stereophonix, a DJ-crew from Regensburg, are well-known for good music, good mood and memorable moments. A mixture of fine selected mashup, hiphop, funk and electro songs make them a musical superlative…

Perfect parameters for a wild party night and an appropriate ispo take-off.

Party on!

After a 3-year break new title sponsor Nike brings Air & Style back into the Olympic Stadium Munich

Yesterday we attended a press conference for the upcoming Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich in a very fancy room in Munich’s town hall. Upcoming Air & Style in Munich? You are correct: The legendary big air snowboard comp will make its return to the capital of beer and being Bavarian on February 12th, 2011. Some more quick facts: It’s going to be a TTR 6-star event, Nike 6.0 is the new main sponsor, there will be a couple of music acts (that have yet to be announced) and there won’t be any snowmobiling, FMXing or any other combustion-engine-powered discipline.

Compared to the last Munich Air & Style in 2007 ticket prices will be lower (with the cheapest category being a mere 25 euros for the entire day), and other than that there was a lot of talk about Munich’s bid on the Olympics in 2018 (which everyone was positive about), the Air & Style in Beijing (which is not considered to contradict the strong note of freedom in our sport), and the budget for the Munich event (which, according to AIr & Style founder Andrew Hourmont is “bigger than one million euros and smaller than two million”). Peetu Piiroinen and Elias Elhardt also had the chance to talk about the awesomeness of this piece of news.

After the press conference we dragged Peetu Piiroinen, Ethan Morgan and their team manager Jonathan “The Goodlife” Weaver to our office, offered them some tea, and ended up having Ethan talk about the event. Check out the clip for his thoughts on this big news in the event world! (We also talked to Peetu, but this developed more into an overall talk about the upcoming season so we’ll keep it separate from this piece of news).

And for those who want to know all the details check out the official press release, time-consumingly pasted into this post:

Here's the press release shot of some dude getting wild in front of the Olympic Park's incredible moving tower.

Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich 2011: After a 3-year break new title sponsor Nike brings Air & Style back into the Olympic Stadium Munich / Unique mix of snowboarding and music

With a new title sponsor the snowboard world elite returns into the Olympic Stadium at the Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich on February 12th 2011. After a 3-year break the Mother of all snowboard events return into the Bavarian capital and Olympic applicant city 2018, thanks to Nike’s dedication to the contest.

The last Munich appearance of the heroes on the board, that means the world to so many, is still unforgotten. In winter 2007 snowboard history was written at the Olympic Stadium in Munich. In front of 30.000 stoked spectators Kevin Pearce (USA) set new athletic standards and initiated an era of progression, which found its preliminary peak in February 2010 at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. The Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich 2011 wants to tie in exactly at this moment – to be nothing less and nothing more than to be the ne plus ultra when it comes to straight jump snowboarding.

The proven and tested set-up with its 40 meter high kicker allows snowboarding on world-class level. The legendary call of the Air & Style and the classification as a 6-Star TTR Swatch World Snowboard Tour contest guarantee the world’s best to appear in the line-up. The best of the best on snowboards battle for 1,000 TTR-Points, an overall price money of € 75,000 and the famous “Ring of Glory”

The world class snowboarding will come with two live music acts live on stage. Tickets will be available from € 25 for grandstand tickets to 38 € for the arena-flat tickets.
Andrew Hourmont, founder of the Air & Style: „After the revival of the Air & Style in Innsbruck 2008 another dream comes true with the return of the Air & Style Munich. After witnessing memorable moments at the past Air & Styles at the Olympic Stadium Munich, Nike 6.0 and the city of Munich made the return possible. The Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich 2011 is also going to be a boost for the 2018 Olympic Winter games application.“

Christine Strobl, deputy mayor of Munich: „I am looking forward to the Air & Style. It will be an enrichment for the sport-loving city of Munich. By supporting the Air & Style we want to send out a positive signal for young upcoming sports.“

Edgar Jorissen, Marketing director Nike AGS: „ As the premium event of the worldwide snowboard elite the Air & Style belongs back to Munich. We are very happy to realize the return of the legendary Contest together with the Air & Style Company. The Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich is an important part of our long term commitment to snowboarding.“
For the first time in history the Air & Style will take place at three different locations during one season. It starts with the Oakley and Shaun White present Air & Style Beijing 2010 on December 4th, followed by the Billabong Air & Style Innsbruck-Tirol 2011 on February 5th in the Bergisel stadium. The third and last Air & Style will be the Nike 6.0 Air & Style Munich 2011 on February 12th in the Olympic stadium. All three events will be ranked as 6-Star-Events within the Swatch TTR World Snowboard tour.

We quizzed Dan and JP during their Absinthe tour Munich stop

As you might have seen in this post we attended Absinthe’s Munich premiere. And since we were there we thought we’d also have a quick word with two of the heaviest hitters out there, Dan ‘I defy death’ Brisse and JP Solberg. They talk about NowHere, their performance in it, party strategies and their German skills. And since we are as committed to our readers as you can be we recorded our conversations and are now posting them for your viewing pleasure. Or should I make two posts out of them? Oh well, work’s already been done. Here you go!

In town with the Absinthe Crew

The crew during the presentation. Yes, we were a little late and did not get the best seats...

You see, last weekend they sent me to the Munich premiere of Absinthe’s new movie NowHere. I knew I was expected to take a couple of pictures, and I did. It only dawns on me now that I was supposed to write a lengthy review of the movie, too. I can’t dot it. I did not take any notes. I was semi-drunk. I will give you a two-paragraph summary instead. On a positive note this will save you from scrolling through four pages of senseless drivel.

Dan Brisse. Alive.

Well, as I said things went down in Munich, or in the cinema at the ‘Sendlinger Tor’ to be more specific. The place was packed with around 400 Absinthe fans, friends, and industry folks. Brusti introduced the crew and the riders present, namely Jules Reymond, Dan Brisse, and JP Solberg, and they stoked the crowd out with a classic product-toss/prize draw spectacle. Then lights went dark and they showed the controversial Nike Snowboarding ad (spoiler: Danny Kass gets devoured by Zombies) and a clip from tour sponsor Bench. And then it was all about the movie. There was no official party afterwards, but most people walked over to the obscure Ksar club, which is where the movie was discussed over a beer or three.

JP, Brusti, Kelli, Mr Bench, Shane Charlebois, and Dan Brisse get ready to party!

In terms of movie-making it was a classic Absinthe experience: The riding was top notch, the music once again not your everyday electro pop, the parts edited into each other with an excellent flow, and every now and then the Absinthe logo popped up to indicate some bonus section on the DVD (which was kind of weird, considering we were watching it in a movie theatre). Highlights included the shared Blauvelt/Müller pow fest, Bode Merrill’s part (including a one-footed AK descent and a back rodeo to backside boardslide), the girls section (composed of MFR and Annie Boulanger going bigger than any other girl), and Dan Brisse, who seemed to cheat death in more than just one situation and scored the well-deserved movie ender.

Party!

Add the usual suspects Wolle Nyvelt (with an unseen mastery of his noboard game), Gigi Rüf (with a great yet small part due to his commitments to his many other movie projects), Jules Reymond, Blair Habenicht, Lucas Debari, Sylvain Bourbousson, Cale Zima (adding some mandatory tight pants steeze), Freddie K, Bjorn Leines, Terje and the YES crew, and mix it with some great footage from a Kamchatka trip and a revisiting of Chad’s gap, and you get way more than you would have hoped for. If anything you might moan about a personal dislike of the soundtrack (which is what some people afterwards actually did – losers!) and maybe the fact that you weren’t blown out of your seat from seeing something totally unexpected. All things considered, though, this flick will make you want to go shredding, and that’s what it’s all about!

Absinthe lady Kelli and YES man JP

Well, I said two paragraphs. That’s it, I won’t stretch your attention span of a five-year-old any longer. Go buy and watch the movie, it is one of the best you will get to see this year! And if you have seen it yourself, use the comments section to tell us what you thought!

More party!

Jules Reymond and, well, Mr Bench.
