In the final episode, you get introduced to the “wheels of death”, a game that consists of JibFest invitees spinning two wheels. One of the wheels has tricks labeled on it. The other one determines what obstacle the trick must be done on. The wheels can come up with some terrifying combinations, but it sometimes also serves as motivation by throwing a bunch of hundred dollar bills into the mix for people who land the tricks.

Further along in the episode, Snow Park Technologies’ Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson and his crew walk us through the history of many features they created that are now considered stock at most snowboard parks. And as we learn, having input from riders like JP Walker, Jeremy Jones, and Dave Downing probably didn’t hurt in the creation process. Near the end of the show watch as we see how the JibFest voting process goes down for “Best Trick” and first, second and third place.

Episode 2 of Vice mag’s in-depth look at the rebirth of Nixon’s legendary Jib Fest last year is live. You should watch this if you like snowboarding.

If you watched last week’s post where Powder & Rails kicked off their series on the Nixon Jib Fest you’ll know that in addition to showing the hammers that some of the most cutting edge jibbers on the planet threw down at last winter’s event, there is a historical aspect to the show that will please riders over the age of 23, and anyone with an interest in snowboarding’s pedigree for that matter.

Episode two gets nostalgic with stories from the events creators and original attendees as they wax lyrical on the early years of JibFest and what made it rad then and what makes it more rad now. Features from the first years of JibFest were modified, updated and brought back for the 2011 event. The circle rail from the 2002 JibFest was made bigger and the S-rail had another section welded onto it, which kept the aesthetic of the past intact while progressing forward. Pro snowboarding legend Brian Thein, one of the invitees to the OG JibFest, was also flown in to keep the 2011 event classic. Watch as Brian straps in and rides with the rest of the crew like no time had passed at all. JP tells us what the heck that slippery stuff on the fun boxes and ledges is made out of and how Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson was responsible for finding the material and making all their fun box dreams come true.

As you may know, last winter the Nixon Jib Fest rose from the ashes and celebrated a banging return to form after an 8-year hiatus. The original contest in 2000 was a the brainchild of Jeremy Jones, JP Walker and Dave Downing who had the idea to celebrate the (at the time) relatively new resurgence in jibbing that they were spearheading and invite some of their bros to a loosely competitive jam session to push the envelope.

After several successful editions the boys moved their attentions elsewhere and the Nixon Jib Fest went into hibernation. Last winter, though, it was time to revive the contest and corral a selection of the most progressive jibbers around to throw down in a custom-built concept park once more. While we posted the hammer highlights of the Nixon Jib Fest a while back, this behind-the-scenes look at the event mixed, with what Steven Hawking might call a Brief History of Jib thrown in for good measure, is awesome. Nixon Jib Fest 2011

In the year 2000, Jeremy Jones, JP Walker and Dave Downing had the idea to hold a top secret, invite-only jib event that only the best jibbers on the globe would be called on to throw down. Their sponsor, Nixon, were pumped and helped the boys make it happen.

It went down for a few years and was always a benchmark for what contemporary jibbing was, but after a while the Jib Fest went into hibernation. Not any more. In winter of 2011 the Nixon jib Fest made a grand return to Northstar-at-Tahoe, this past April 26-28. 15 hand-selected riders took part and for three days – morning, noon and night – the riders ate, slept and rode JibFest creating a memorable experience for this A-list crew of jibbers.
