In conjunction with eyewear masters Dragon, we’re once again offering creative types the chance to get their artwork featured on a banging set of shred goggles. This year, the frame we’ve gone for is the all-new NFX model, and it’s epic! This is one hell of an opportunity, so check the details and get working on your submissions…

DOWNLOAD THE NFX TEMPLATE ILLUSTRATOR (.ai) FILE HERE

*** CONTEST RUNS NOVEMBER 26 2012 – MARCH 1 2013 ***

This year, Dragon are letting you run wild with their brand new model, the NFX. Based on the ‘frameless’ technology of the APX, this offers up a cylindrical lens that’s easy as hell to interchange the less on and gives you epic peripheral vision with a comfy fit and a unique look. Luke Mitrani was feeling it, as he says: “The NFX felt really good on the mountain and the way you can change out lenses so quickly is perfect for me when I am riding and the conditions change.” Download the Illustrator or PDF files according to your preference and go wild.

Once you’ve got your goggle design dialed, email your entries to thecrew@onboardmag.com. Please include your name in the file name. If your submission is over a couple of megabytes please create a .pdf preview and send that. Make sure you include your full name and contact details in the mail you attach your design to, and title your entry Dragon Design Contest 2012/13.

When the contest closes, entries will be judged by Onboard and Dragon and whichever design stokes us out most will be notified as the winner and will receive 10 pairs of their self-designed goggles once they have been produced for the 2014 line.

To reiterate, DEADLINE IS MARCH 1 2013. We’ll gladly accept your submissions from now on in, though, and will be posting some of the better submissions throughout the winter.

Our second, hammer-filled issue of the season hits stores today that will have you frothing to strap in like a rabid wolf. Peek at what’s in issue 132…

DYLAN THOMPSON INTERVIEW

It’s fair to say that Dylan Thompson’s something of an enigma here in Europe but one thing’s certain: his riding’s anything but low-key. After successive, mindblowing urban assaults in FODT’s recent movies we decided to give Dylan the exposure his riding deserves.

KAZAKHSTAN

Last winter our French ed embarked on a journey east with Morgan Lefaucheur and his Almo Films crew. Their destination? Kazakhstan. Going low on the Borat-gags an high on culture, the boys scored the goods and slashed and jibbed the old Soviet state’s impressive mountains and monuments.

GIGI & FICHTL SCORE PERFECT MONTAFON

An early-season dump in the Montafon meant the Pirates crew got off to a sterling start shooting for UNIQUE8. Regional homeboys Gigi Rüf and Marco Feichtner took full advantage of the tit-deep conditions for the lens of Jerome Tanon.

STANDARD FILMS 2112 GALLERY

The legendary Standard Films crew drop in with their 21st snowboard movie this season, entitled 2112. With a host of heavy hitters you can bet this will get your love bus rocking, and we’ve assembled a gallery of bangers from their time shooting.

PLUS

Our Ed in Chief bounces across the pond for the opening of Forum’s The Streets park, we throw a spotlight on the rookies who lit up our Send Off Session, chat Britain with Jamie Nicholls, present some of the finest outerwear around… and there’s even more.

Onboard issue 132 is on sale now at all fine core stores and newsagents so pop down and nab yours. Better still, subscribe to Onboard, bag some free swag and never miss an issue.

We promised in our Halldor Helgason interview in the brand new Onboard #124 that you would get to read the outtakes online.

We promised in our Halldor Helgason interview in Onboard print issue #124 that you’d get to read the outtakes online.

Well, this is our website and these are the outtakes, featuring both Halldor and his mad filmer Johannes Brenning. If you want to read the rest of the interview – including Halldor’s thoughts on competitions, Nike, snowboard movies, Lobster Snowboards and helgasons.com – go to your favourite news agent and buy the latest issue of Onboard (the print magazine, that is)!

Most of our readers really want to relate to your kind of riding, but let’s be honest: They’ll never be as good as you.

Halldor: [laughs] Yeah…

Johannes: They can relate to ME!

They are more likely to think ‘Well, I can hold a camera, I can do that!’

Johannes: I thought you meant my riding! [laughs]

What makes you different from the gazillion of filmers out there? As you said you do everything in a rush…

Johannes: I have some tips on how you can edit faster in Final Cut, and that is: When you edit to a song, you just chop the song up by beats, and you can put the landings or the cuts in between the beats. That makes the edit look a little bit more fun to watch. Other than that it’s just… I don’t think there’s good or bad filmers for skateboarding or snowboarding. It’s more who you film. A good filmer is a filmer who knows good snowboarders. So… You’re all fucked! [both laugh] I don’t know, my advice if you want to get a lot of views is: Get naked, do super crazy, do weird stuff.

Halldor: US people love when…

Johannes: …penises appear. [laughs] Thank God this is Onboard. Euro people understand. [laughs]

Onboard? Print magazine? Yes, it does exist, and it looks like this.

Halldor: Well maybe for people who have been talking about doing their own website. Maybe this is a new opportunity to making it in snowboarding. If you and your friends do a sick website and do sick edits all the time people will recognise you, no matter what. That’s something for people who don’t like contests and just try to do their own thing. If it’s good people will recognise it.

Johannes: Yeah, just one more thing: I think a lot of kids are making videos to make their mum and dad proud. They make super-weird interviews where they explain everything you already see in the video. And I think people don’t really want to watch that. But their dads might be super proud of their son. If you have talking or conversations in your videos make sure it’s not fake and make sure it’s not super boring.

Halldor: But it is really important that it is emotional… and sensitive.

Johannes: Yeah, sensitive and emotional.

Halldor: Yeah, sensitive and… weird. And voiceovers!

Johannes: Yeah, voiceovers, but you can’t talk too much about that now. That’s the next big thing coming on the helgasons.com. Voiceovers!

Well, that’s all for now. Read the rest of the interview in our latest print issue!

HALLDOR HELGASON INTERVIEW

No, Halldor ain't has his nose broken and no, we ain't been messing with him. It's just a print thang.

Halldor’s bossing it right now. Girls want to be with him, guys want to be him, he bagged the opener in Standard’s TB20, he’s leading the charge online, he comes either first or dead last at contests… Halldor is the man. Our German ed hooked up with him and infamous partner in crime Johannes Brenning in Norway to get the lowdown.

THE ART OF FLIGHT

Brain Farm’s latest mindbending mix of high-octane shredding and cinematography that would give Spielberg wood has hit stores, so we hit up the boys to get the scoop on what went into making The Art of Flight.

ARCTIC EXPOSURE

YES Snowboards founding fathers JP Solberg, Romain de Marchi and DCP rented a boat and toured the Norwegian fjords with JP’s bro Stian. Our shooter Matt Georges was along for the ride to document this unique trip. We think we avoided any ‘I’m on a boat!’ gags too.

JIBBER JABBER – US STREET SCENE IS ON FIRE

The urban riding scene in the US is exploding, with year-on-year more and more insanity being thrown down on the streets. Tom Monterosso looks back at where US jibbing came from and where it’s at.

LUDDE LEJKNER PROFILE

This Swedish ripper is on a roll right now. Fresh off a solid opening section in the new Isenseven movie, Kaleidoscope, Ludde locks down his first major Onboard coverage with a selection of street savvy skills.

Correcting cock-ups caused by fools. The neat-o plaid Nike 6.0 jacket with a blue insulated vest that we presented in our 2011/12 Product Guide is NOT the Vernon. It is, in fact, the Nike 6.0 Bellevue jacket and it retails at €250.

Despite the best attentions of our team of highly trained simians working all the hours god sends to make sure everything is present and correct, we have noticed an error has slipped through and made it in the hallowed pages of our 2011 Product Guide. Nike 6.0‘s tasty-looking Bellevue jacket was wrongly presented as the ‘Vernon’, and wrongly priced at €340 – the true SRP of the Bellevue is €250.

Apologies, and rest safe in the knowledge that those responsible for the mistake have been shot.

Our last print mag of the season is on sale NOW. Sneak a peek of what’s in store for y’all…

COLD TURKEY

Onboard’s North American journo, Tom Monterosso, traveled to Turkey with a crack unit of Ride riders – Darrel Mathes, Alex Cantin, Hana Beaman and Austin Hironaka – in seach of a fresh side sliding experience, but comes away with the knowledge that what he left behind isn’t all that bad after all.

FLYING HIGH WITH BRAIN FARM

Brain Farm’s second 2-year epic – The Art of Flight – is set to drop this autumn. With the title confirmed, the teaser out (watch the teaser NOW) and shooting close to wrapping we caught up with one half of the production company’s axis of awesome, director Curt Morgan, to get an inkling of what we can expect.

ELIAS ELHARDT PROFILE

Elias Elhardt is a “Calm person who thinks before he talks;” “as a rider he is a freaking cat: (he is) just happy with everything;” ”sometimes it feels like you talk to a wall when he’s daydreaming.” These are just a few of the descriptions given by folk who know Elias Elhardt. From TTR podiums to the powder fields of Alps this young German has done ‘em all. Onboard takes a closer look at one of Germany’s most promising riders.

HOMIES & HONEYS

On a trip out East to Poland the Homies – Morgan Lefaucher, Pierre Rue, Cedric Gianvola, Fred Couderc, Aymeric Tonin and crew – went with a head full of stereotypes. What was not expected was the jib potential of the place, as they were guided through the architecture by Polish rail master Wojtek Pawlusiak and his buddy Kuba. Goodbye Helsinki, hello Katowice!

HOW TO… BUNGEE

For years, a jib day has meant spending ages sorting your ramp out and the rest of the time shredding. But now the days of building drop-ins and hauling ass with a shovel or ski pole are over. Now anything that looks as if it may be jibbable – is. This is all thanks to the bungee. Check the 101

PLUS

Nikita Chickita, Gjermund Bråten Profile, Japan Jibbing with Rome, Handplant Trickology, plus heaps of killer action shots, product spotlights, competitions, news and more.

Check it out at your local shred store or newsagent, or subscribe to Onboard and never miss an issue.

So, after much deliberation, a few Chinese burns and a bloody nose or two, here are the winners of the first Artec/Onboard Design Contest.

It was a tough call but between the Onboard crew and Artec’s design team and crew of riders we settled on 10 we felt were the best of the avalanche of submissions we received. Then, we voted again to arrive at a top 3, all of which will have their designs be made into real-life, wood and fibreglass snowboards. The remaining 7 entrants will receive Artec/Onboard care packages which should go some way to softening the blow of being so close but yet so far.

Congratulations to all you creative peeps!
