Snowboard phenomenon Victor De Le Rue joins his eldest brother the pioneering freerider Xavier De Le Rue, star of both Relentless’ Lives of the Artists films, as the latest rider to be proudly sponsored by Relentless Energy Drink.

The 23 year old is the second International snow recruit for Relentless – alongside Britain’s triple X Games gold medallist Jenny Jones, Pirate Films star Tyler Chorlton, Halfpipe champion Dom Harington and Freeride World Tour champion Xavier De Le Rue.

The French freestyler has sent ripples through the European scene for the last few seasons, placing on podiums and filming, including a star section on Hara Kiri Productions debut full length Pan Pan. This winter the Pyrenees-native also released a signature outerwear collection and pro-snowboard line for Rip Curl, plus he rides for Nike 6.0 footwear.

Youngest of five, Victor – aka VDLR – was encouraged to get outdoors as a kid, and so, along with his De Le Rue siblings, developed a deep passion for the mountains at a very young age: he discovered the ‘amazing feeling’ of snowboarding at just 6 years old.

Now the 23 year old is known for sending it on all terrain: Relentless Energy’s multitalented new rider nails street rails, park jibs, halfpipes and monster kickers in liquid smooth, true ‘No Half Measures’ style.

Victor’s now following his big brother into freeriding and film, travelling the globe with fellow French crew Hara Kiri or sessionning the park at his hometown of Saint Lary, in the Pyrenees. Victor also features in Rip Curl’s Welcome Home series, with whom he’s currently on a powder-saturated tour of Japan.

“Victor is a fantastic and talented addition to the Relentless team,” says Relentless Energy representative Steven Ruhl. “After Xavier’s pioneering freeride adventures in Antarctica and Greenland for our Lives of the Artists films, Victor perfectly complements his brother’s talents with his freestyle approach – and extends the Relentless athlete family further in the international scene. We look forward to following Victor’s trips and working with him this season – and beyond.”

With a season of filming ahead of him, and the support of Relentless Energy, expect to see more of this bright new star very soon – especially if he lands his favourite trick: a naked double backflip.

Our buddy Johannes Ostergaard got to hit the road with Jenny last winter to produce this documentary short on her life, how a girl from Bristol went on to become one of female snowboarding’s heaviest talents and basically what makes her tick. Check it out for an insight into the triple X-Games winner and one of the funnest people we know.

Lives Of The Artists: Follow Me Down is the latest cinematic adventure and highly anticipated edition of the groundbreaking film series by Relentless Energy Drink.

Relentless have a sequel to the original LOTA set to drop soon, in which they’ve upped the shred interest significantly to document one of the craziest trips ever in this feature-length film. Remember the Antarctica feature in Onboard 113? A hefty chunk of LOTA: Follow Me Down is focussed on this insane adventure that Xavier De Le Rue and Jeremy Jones undertook to ride virgin lines close to the south pole.

On the three week expedition they spurned the clichéd ‘heli-drop and ride’ big mountain approach to search instead for more visceral rewards, as Jeremy and Xavier scale and ride near-vertical faces, with the permanent risk of avalanches or drowning in the iceberg- and seal-littered seas below – and while almost three days away from the nearest hospital.

“When you’re dropped by a helicopter on a peak, you’re exposed to danger for a couple of minutes; when you’re hiking you’re exposed for hours,” explains Jones. “After hiking you’re already on a 4 hour buzz, then you add on top of that the endorphins from dropping in and adrenaline from riding – it’s a cocktail of chemicals: the best drug in the world.”

After months of planning and anticipation, Jones and de La Rue begin their adventure in November 2009, setting off from Ushuaia, Argentina’s most southerly point, to undertake a six day crossing via Drakes Passage – renowned as the roughest seas on the planet. Yet, this alien, hostile environment, full of unknown dangers and far from civilisation, belies a personal mission for the pair: a blank canvas for them to write history with the most pioneering expedition ever seen in snowboarding.

“There were a few moments where I questioned whether we should turn back – sometimes you should listen to fate,” remembers De Le Rue. “We’re in a very hostile environment and I want to feel welcome. I don’t want to feel like I’m coming here with my big feet and disrespecting the place. We’ve seen both sides of Antarctica – the beautiful and the nasty.”

The film’s score is composed by the other subject of its attention – UNKLE’s James Lavelle. The crew followed Lavelle and UNKLE as they toured Tokyo, Moscow, St. Petersburg and London to capture an exclusive insight into previously uncharted areas to set the record straight once and for all.

All this is accompanied by in-depth, insightful interviews that documents the creative minds behind these high profile personalities.

The full film will be out on Mpora.com in September, but in the meantime get hyped on the teaser.

Extra bangers from the Antarctica story we ran in issue 113.

As you’ll doubtless know, Xavier De Le Rue and Jeremy Jones hopped on a boat and sailed to shred Antarctica last year (as you do) to film for Relentless Energy’s upcoming release, Lives of the Artists 2. The film’s scheduled to be released this September where you can gawp at the footage from this, listen to James Lavelle’s original soundtrack and get pumped on the other stuff they’ll be cramming in.

Here’s some facts about the Antarctica trip…

· From Ushuaia Port in Argentina, it took a 62 hour open ocean crossing, on the ship Ice Axe, via Drakes Passage, to get to the Arctic Penisular

· One of the tallest peaks was Mount Francois – at 9600 ft

· There was a 6 hour window for riding faces – too early and they were sheer ice; too late and it refreezes in seconds.

· The average drop for peaks was 3000+ feet.

· The reached peaks via splitboard, hiking & helicopter

· The crew spent 7 days filming in Antarctica

Next to freeride legend Xavier de le Rue, Relentless now added the hottest UK talent in snowboarding history to their team: 2 times X Games gold medalist Jenny Jones!

Although she was quite visible on the scene for a while already, with her great part in the all girl’s movie Stance and her second consecutive X Games title, Jenny is now amongst the Euro shred super stars for sure.

And the Relentless people think so as well of course: Relentless spokesperson Steven Ruhl said ‘We’re really excited to announce that Xavier de la Rue and Jenny Jones have joined the expanding Relentless Athlete team. They’re two people that we’ve been following for a while now and as Relentless is based on the principles of being pioneering, pushing the boundaries and having a No Half Measures approach, both Xavier and Jenny are a perfect fit’’.
Congrats Jenny!
