Re-live the times when snowboarding was actually cool by watching this gem from 1993. The rider list is like a who’s who of shred legends, with Terje, Mike Ranquet, Jamie Lynn, Bryan Iguch, John Cardiel and more tearing shit up. Hell of a find, Powder & Rails dudes.

Here’s the spiel from Vice’s Powder and Rails guys, who you should definitely bookmark if you like a bit of vintage legendary shred.

In 1993 Dave Seoane followed a group of snowboarders up and down the West Coast and the Mid West as they leave their limousines only to shred the mountains along the way.

Roadkill was the first video Dave Seoane directed way back in 1993. It was a huge departure from the previous FLF videos: there was no narration and no filler; it was all riding and lifestyle. It was also back when everyone listened to Epitaph Records bands, so there’s a lot of those on soundtrack. The crew all ride around in a limousine, between breakdowns, up and down the West Coast and Mid West, shredding at different mountains along the way.

There are a billion highlights: Jamie Lynn traveling with Circe Wallace from Washington to Tahoe to shoot what would become his signature frontside 3′s, Steve Graham going bigger than everyone, Shaun Palmer sporting a clown hair-do doing an enormous backside 3 off of the Donner cliffs, John Cardiel wildly ripping both snowboard and skateboard, just to name a few. Actually, Cards does some of the best looking air to fakie’s of all time in this thing, all on a mini ramp surrounded by snow in the woods. Future legends of style Jeff Brushie, Brian Thien, and Bryan Iguchi also show up, ripping everything Big Bear had to offer—from rails to jumps to pipe. If you love the early 90′s skate style vibe of big Blind jeans and fast music you’ll love Roadkill.

This Tuesday’s lookback into snowboarding’s glorious past finds Shawn Farmer’s seminal part from 1991′s Fall Line Films release, Critical Condition. It is just plain awesome.

Shawn Farmer was arguably snowboarding’s original badass. Not only did he have the attitude, he had the slightly unhinged, hell for leather approach to snowboarding that always marks out certain riders from their more technically proficient peers. From his early part in the original Totally Board, to this gem from Critical Condition, Farmer’s riding was always nothing short of balls out… hell, he even stepped it up in his 40s to ride backcountry booters with Shaun White and Travis Rice in First Descent a couple years back. And did we mention attitude? He was brash, unashamed and ever ready to flip the bird whenever he saw fit, making him the perfect poster boy for snowboarding’s early, more punk rock years.

Check this rewind to re-live a time when rapping your part’s tune, riding 2m+ boards and flat landings were no big deal. As he says, “We do it my way and this is my resume…”

Great times and fun rides!

A couple weeks back I saw Travis Rice at European X Games who told me all about Nick Perata and Mark Sullivan organizing the King of the Hill again after 10 years off. He told me I should show up. A couple days later I contacted Perata and a week later, I was arriving in Valdez in an RV to shred those amazing mountains!

I had heard about that event quite a bit, especially since Axel Pauporte had won the last sword. And I have to admit I was a bit anxious on what to expect as far as terrain goes. I had never participated in a freeride event before and the mountains in Valdez are knowing for never ending very steep slopes. But really the event was just a very good excuse for me to go shred those amazing mountains.

David and I landed in Anchorage and stocked our RV with tons of organic food. We got to Valdez 7 hours later in the evening. And of course we started our trip with getting stuck on the parking lot straight away! And that’s were you see who your friends are – the ones that help out and push! Haha! That was such a classic move! Luckily we got saved by generous locals and Eric Themel pushing the RV with the help of a 4 wheel drive!

The weather is unpredictable in Alaska and for most of it I was expecting long down days. But the next morning I open my eyes to discover bright bluebird! Time to screw some bindings on my board and I was standing on top of that mountain wondering how the snow was going to feel like. I had a blast on my second run, where I took Travis’line with a bs 360 on a fun hit. The atmosphere of the event was super cool! After shredding our lines everyone was staying all together at the bottom checking out everyone else’s run and cheering! The 3rd run was on the golly to death in sun baked and windpacked crap snow. The kind of run which makes you appreciate good ones. I heard a lot of noise on Travis and Scotty Lago’s runs. But they were dropping in before and I couldn’t see their lines. But looking at their lines, they definitely killed it. The stand out line I have seen that day was Mike Basich dropping that impressive double cliff.

We had a great party after the sword giving… Of course Travis was the new king and I was pretty stoked to hear I finished second… Shaun Farmer lost tied 6th place arm wrestling against Mark Landvik but took revenge freestyle rapping later on that night! The dance party was awesome and I can tell you that Mike Basich’s got moves!

Luckily we had a couple bad weather days to chill before the sun came out again for 4 days in a row heliboarding! We were staying in our RV on the pass with lots of other fun shredders. That was the whole concept of Tailgate Alaska! A big camping party up in the mountains and it was great! We shared heli time with Martin Cernik and his crew which was pretty sweet. They were 5 big dudes sharing an RV, and it was nice to realize that ours didn’t smell bad at all compared to theirs! Haha! The mountains are sik in Valdez and the people are really cool! Can’t wait to be back next year!

The Woodstock of Snowboarding is what they call the Longboard Classic in Stuben. This celebration of nostalgia and fun has become Europe’s biggest old-school snowboard event. Among the many snowboard legends that will rock up on April 17, 2010 are Terry “Godfather of Freestyle” Kidwell, Shaun “I’ll have another one” Farmer, Micky “First European Halfpipe Champion” Früh, Reto “I won the Air&Style in the year dot” Lamm, Jose “I invented the term European snowboard pro” Fernandez, and Regis “Apocalypse then, Apo now” Rolland.

<img class="size-full wp-image-17662" title="Starting Crowd by Roland Schopper x-aces" src="http://cdn3.coresites.mpora.com/onboard/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Starting-Crowd-by-Roland-Schopper-x-aces.jpg" alt="Scene from the new Sony Bravia ad.
Three generations of snowboard heroes from industry, riders, media and John Q. Public will celebrate the eleventh Longboard Classic together. This year the focus will be on the kids “who will be taught the real spirit of snowboarding by the older ones” – if nothing else this should be fun to watch.

The music acts include Darby and Joan with their dynamic Indie/ Alternative Rock style and support from the LBC Allstars featuring Shawn Farmer (Vocals), Terry Kidwell (Guitar), Bob Klein (Drums), Paul Gruber (Guitar) & LBC friends.

<img class="size-full wp-image-17661" title="Hunk of Metal by Mike Chantry" src="http://cdn1.coresites.mpora.com/onboard/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Hunk-of-Metal-by-Mike-Chantry.jpg" alt="The LBC Allstars.
As usual, the Longboard Classic race will start at the Albona Grat (2,408m). After a Le Mans mass start they will go down a thousand meters off-piste to Stuben Village (1,407m) in four different categories (Kids under 14, Old School, Boys und Girls). The event’s mantra goes like this: “It is not important to be first but to meet friends, find new ones and to have fun snowboarding with like-minded people.” Does this sound like a good time or what?

<img class="size-full wp-image-17664" title="Finish by Sylvia Margreiter" src="http://cdn1.coresites.mpora.com/onboard/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Finish-by-Sylvia-Margreiter1.jpg" alt="See, the DO use longboards.
If your board quiver does not feature anything beyond your 152 rail stick, longboards and freeride equipment from selected brands can be tested. To make the registration as laid-back as possible, we recommend you register online in advance. The provisional list of participants is published on the event’s website. And if you want to car pool (and we recommend: everyone should!) – the participants can be sorted by post code, city or name!
