The last installment of our roundup of spots to ride this summer takes in the glacier in Folgefonna. Ever seen those crazy sunset shots? Folgefonna? Ever heard tales of crazy all-nighters with Norwegian girls? Folgefonna. Cliff jumping, fjord swimming and skateboarding? Folgefonna it. It ain’t surprising this bad boy’s been going for over a decade and a half.

Folgefonna

At this legendary Norwegian camp, now in its 15th year, you can ride all day and then go chill in the sea when you’ve had enough shred time, plus being that you’re way up north the sun barely sets so there’s some epic evening scenics. From June 21 to July 10 the guys will be on point to make sure everything’s set up right, with lakeside lodgings, mini ramps, food stands and more offered for campers. In the park you can expect plenty of kickers, rails and boxes all groomed with love but sadly there’s no pipe. €450 gets you housing, liftpass, coaching, activities, and daily transportation. If you just want to ride the glacier, an adult day pass is 325 Kronor but for freestyling you’re definitely best off getting on one of the bangin’ Folgefonna camps.

Back to France for the penultimate Summer Shred Guide.

Once home to the legendary Snowboard UK board tests and an assortment of camps, the summer scene in Tignes has dropped off over the past few years, but there’s still a park shaped for the summer months that can offer up some fun slushboarding.

Tignes

The glacier is open every day from 19 June to 29 August from 7.15am to 1pm and for a €29 day pass you can be up on the Grande Motte glacier in 7 minutes by funicular where there’s 20k of runs to shralp. The park at the bottom of the north face has a pipe, kickers, hips and quarters and rails of all sizes that will so you’ll find something to hit whatever your level of riding. Though Val Claret, by the lift, is a typical French concrete monstrosity, there’s nice lake to hurl yourself into down the road in Tignes, an 800 m2 skatepark, heaps of bike trails and a golf course. Check out the dudes at the Dragon Lodge, a sweet chalet by the lake run by some ‘safe as fuck’ Welsh shredders.

Italy’s on the cards for this latest Summer Shred Guide, as take a look at what the legendary Val Senales will be offering up. Like Les Deux Alpes, it’s one of the few glaciers that still maintains a solid series of camps through the summer months, with each week attracting different crews and pro teams for you to hang out and shralp with. Here’s the skinny…

Val Senales

More Snowboarding Videos >>

Val Senales opens up its summer freestyle program for six weeks in June and July where you’ll find the Gentlemen Riders crew taking care of the Nitro Snowpark. These dudes know sure know what’s up and have created an huge playground on their 120,000 m2 bit of glacier, with Easy, Medium and Pro lines meaning there’s something for everyone. Also sick is that it takes less than an hour from your bed to the park. There’s heaps of team and camp weeks to choose from, with all-inclusive options, and if you’re under 18 you can get on the 2010 Rookie Camp from 3 to 10 July. There’s a good skatepark, all those summer aftershred activities and, come sundown, the Italians sure know how to make party.

We stay in Switzerland for the latest Summer Shred Guide, taking a look at the goods the guys in the Gravity Park will pull together from July.

Zermatt

[excuse some of the two-planking but this gives you a good idea of last year’s setup]

Hop a valley west from Saas-Fee and you’re in Zermatt, sat staring straight on at the giant pyramid of granite that’s the Matterhorn. Get on the glacier and head for the Plateau Rosa which opens from 10 July and you’ll be able to get involved with the Gravity Park, shaped daily by a team of five savvy snowboarders. With booters from 2 to 20m, you ain’t got no excuses not to have honed your freestyling after a stint in Zermatt and should you want to go for a burn there’s 25k of runs to butter. Sadly the Stoked Summer Camps are no more, but simply hook yourself up with a hot local milk maiden and you’ll just have to shell out for the day pass, which is a cool 78 CHF.

In today’s Summer Shred Guide, we check out what the Swiss resort of Saas Fee has to offer shralpers this summer. There’s two things you should know about Saas Fee: there’s a lot of Kalbermattens in town, and carjacking the electric police wagons is a BAD idea. That being said, it’s a damn fine spot to shred and watching the bits of the glacier break off with an Ollie Reed-sized hangover is something to tell the grandkids. Here it is…

Set to open on 3 July, the park in Saas Fee is planned to be constantly adaptable to make the best use of the glacier’s terrain and the changing weather and snow conditions. Hangin’ tough in southwestern Switzerland it’s a couple of hours transfer from Geneva or Milan and getting from the town (no cars allowed in town) to the park is quick and easy on the gondola. For an adult day pass at 66 CHF, there’s always a wide selection of kickers, jibs and rails plus a pipe that can either be epic or a bit kinked depending on the sun, all set to a killer glacial backdrop. The skate park in town’s odd but fun too. Check out the video above of the Nike 6.0 crew there a couple of summers back for an idea of what’s on offer.

MPORA Action Sports >>

A 30-40 minute drive up from Mayrhofen gets you to the Hintertux base station, from where a couple gondolas and a t-bar ride will spit you out at the top of the Hintertux Betterpark. Once home to the legendary SPC camps, the park is still kept in great shape by the dedicated crew with plenty to keep all levels happy. Mayrhofen is the best spot to base yourself out of as you’ll have more to do off the hill, but if you want to maximise shred time you can stay in Tux and slash the bed-to-park time. Lifts are open from 9am to 3.30pm, with the pro line and medium lines closed by 2.30pm, and a day pass will set you back €35. If you’re heading for a day, check the weather forecast as it’s not uncommon for the clouds to roll in and kill visibility in the park.

The best spots to ride this summer

The L2A summer park. Scroll down for video.

The best spots to ride this summer.

If you’re still jonesing for the shred, stop bitching: get yourself to a glacier and have at it. Summer riding is way more awesome than having a pint glass cracked over your head watching 22 guys chase a ball, or scrapping with the most selfish humans on the planet for sloppy waves. We’ll be bringing you one spot each day for the next 8 days, starting with Les Deux Alpes.

Though summer ‘camps’ aren’t as popular as they were back in the day, there’s still a fair few knocking about – notably in Les 2 Alpes – but that’s not to say that the glacier crews are any less pumped to shape killer parks in spots without camps. You’ll just have to rock up and sort out your own digs and aftershred activities. It’s not exactly rocket science. Fly, drive or save the planet and car share with people like mountainrideshare.com or go-shred.com

“Summer snowboarding’s great because you can ride in the mornings and hang out in the warm sunshine in the afternoon and do cool things like archery and luging and play football and go skateboarding!” That’s what they usually honk. And they’d be right. But you can also get into great fights with homies from Grenoble, get herpes off some loved up Scando celebrating mid-summer and perhaps, if you’re lucky, get to see one of the glacier town ‘locals’ ambling around dragging their knuckles though the trail of their drool. It’s a mixed bag.

Nah, slushy summer sessions are seriously epic. Pack your sunscreen, some water and a wifebeater and prepare your self for late-night partying and early starts. And, whisper it, you can score pow every now and then, too. Here’s what 2 Alpes has to offer…

Les 2 Alpes

Open June 16 to end of August, Les Deux Alpes is located close to Grenoble and has a huge glacial area up to 3600m high where you’ll find one of summer’s most expansive terrain parks. This year the crew improved the Beginners’ Area, shifted the BoarderCross track, and the pipe and pro lines will benefit from the snow harvesting done all winter. 2 Alpes is camp town, with Brotherhood, Forum, Protest Coliflor, Rip Curl, Apo, Burton and more having camps offering package deals that include different combos of accommodation, passes, coaching, testing, aftershredding and partying for varying budgets. Adult day pass is €33.50.
